Resident Graduate Scholarship Programme

The Resident Graduate Scholarship (RGS) Programme was launched in September 2002 to advance bilateral collaboration between Hong Kong Baptist University and participating member institutions. The programme is conceived with a reciprocal vision to bring students of participating universities to Hong Kong, under the co-supervision of HKBU faculty and vice versa. By September 2006, LEWI has sponsored 39 research students from Mainland China and overseas member universities. Recently, it has been decided to expand the scope of these programmes to consider applications from outside of the LEWI consortium. When resources are available, applications from non-member institutions will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, with an emphasis on the proposal s relevance to East-West studies. Beginning from January 2004, students from non-member universities can also apply. Students may apply for a semester or a full year of research under the co-supervision of HKBU faculty.


Value

HK$6,000 (about US$770) for each month spent abroad, to be awarded by the David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies; research facilities at the discretion of the host institution; other forms of subsidies which might be given by the home institution.

Accommodation in Hong Kong

Successful applicants would stay at NTT International House on HKBU campus. The rental rates are as follows:
Room sharing: HK$3,000 per student for 30 consecutive nights.
Single occupancy: HK$7,200 per room for 30 consecutive nights.

A caution money of HK$1,000 per student which is refundable has to be paid together with the 1st installment (first 5 months) of the room rental.
1st installment of room rental plus caution money should be settled in 10 days upon receiving notice of successful application

 


Obligations of home institutions

The home institution of successful applicant(s) is expected to formally appoint the faculty of the host institution as field supervisor or co-supervisor of the student's thesis (please download a sample Letter of Appointment).

Duration

One full year or one semester, as mutually agreed between all parties concerned.
  

Eligibility and Requirements

  • The applicant must be a full-time student enrolled in a graduate degree programme by research at any tertiary institutions working on a thesis with an East-West axis, and must have the approval of his/her supervisor and home institution to accept the scholarship.

  • Furthermore, he/she should have secured confirmation from a specific department/unit of the host institution that a faculty with the relevant expertise is available as field supervisor/co-supervisor to supervise his/her research.

  • Once enrolled in the host institution, the participating student will be subject to rules and regulations as well as rights and privileges enjoyed by regular students of the host university and;

  • Required to engage full-time in his/her designated research project(s);

  • At the end of their study at HKBU:

    RGS recipients are required to organize a RGS seminar (For previous seminars please click here );

    RGS recipients are required to submit an essay (6,000 – 8,000 words in English/ 12,000 – 15,000 words in Chinese) based on their thesis for the publication of the LEWI Working Paper Series. The essay should be submitted before they leave the Institute. Before the submission, written recommendation from the filed supervisors would be required;

  • To duly acknowledge the scholarship award and the field supervisor/co-supervisor in his/her thesis as well as all related publications.

Application

Applications for the spring semester starting from February should be submitted before 15 September, and applications for the fall semester starting from September should be submitted before 15 March. All applications can be submitted via post or fax. Materials required for the application include:

     (a) Application Form;

     (b) Full curriculum vitae;

     (c) Statement of objective;

     (d) Research proposal;

     (e) Letter of Approval from appropriate authority of home institution and endorsement by official LEWI
          representative at home institution; and

     (f)  Field Supervision Acceptance Form

(Applicant should approach and request an academic from HKBU to be his/her field supervisor.The field supervisor needs to fill in the Field Supervision Acceptance Form and send it to LEWI directly. Please note that without the signed Acceptance Form, the application is not considered complete.)

     (g) Any other supporting documents.

Visitorship Programme

To facilitate exchange among participating member institutions with a view to promote collaborative research and other scholarly activities with an East-West axis.

Value

Successful applicants will be awarded up to HK$20,000 (about US$2,600) for travel expenses; hospitality at the discretion of the receiving institution; and leave and/or other forms of subsidies given by the sending institution.

Duration

Up to two weeks anytime during the year, or as mutually agreed between concerned parties.

Eligibility

The applicant must be a full-time faculty member, and must have obtained approval and leave of absence from his/her home institution to accept the visitorship. Furthermore, he/she should have secured an invitation from a full-time academic of  the receiving institution, preferably from the chairperson of a specific department, with details of visit clearly spelt out. Priority will be given to applicants who can provide a clear purpose statement for the proposed visit in terms of specific or possible collaborative projects. Usually, Lewi only considers applicants from member institutions to undertake research at Hong Kong Baptist University. However, if the research is of high relevance to East-West studies, and when resources are available, Lewi will also consider applications from non-member institutions on a case-by-case basis.

Obligation

The successful applicant is required to present one to two seminars on his/her research in the receiving institution and to submit the seminar paper(s) to the Institute for publication consideration in the LEWI Working Paper Series. He/She should also submit, within TWO MONTHS after the visit, a report to the Institute with a copy of the report to the relevant department/office of both the receiving and sending institutions. Application

Applications should be submitted before 15 March for visitations in the fall semester and 15 September for the spring semester, and should be sent to the David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies with

     (a) a curriculum vitae;

     (b) a statement of purpose for the visit;

     (c) invitation from a research collaborator or host institution;

     (d) letter of recommendation from the home institution;

     (e) a budgetary plan; and

     (f) any other supporting documents.

Awards

Up to six awards will be made by the Director of the Institute each year, in consultation with relevant parties concerned and subject to the availability of funds. Applicants will normally be informed of the result within two months upon receipt of the application.

Scholar-in-Residence Programme

The Scholar-in-Residence Programme was initiated in 1995 to enhance cooperation among scholars with research interest in East-West studies and is not restricted to LEWI members. By August 2007, the Institute has hosted 40 visiting scholars.

Length of Residence

The length of residence varies according to the research plans of the scholars concerned. Scholars-in-residence normally work with faculty members of Hong Kong Baptist University and/or scholars at other tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. As such, they are expected to participate in the activities of the academic community in Hong Kong in general and those of the University in particular.

Provision of Office & Facilities

Depending on availability, visiting scholars will be given the use of either a standard one-person office or desk space in a research office. Subject to availability, shared use of PCs, access to the library and the Internet, and reception service may be offered.

Application Procedure

Overseas scholars wishing to pursue research projects in East-West studies in Hong Kong are welcome to apply. Application should include a 3-5 page description of the research project, proposed stay in Hong Kong, an up-to-date curriculum vitae, and information on collaborators in Hong Kong, if any.
