The eighth conferring ceremony of the Bachelor of Health Science (Chinese Medicine) offered by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), was held on 19 July, 2008 at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. During the ceremony, our honourable guests, Prof LIU Liang, Dean of School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU, and Professor Daine Alcorn, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Science, Engineering & Technology Portfolio, RMIT University, Australia, opened the proceedings and presented the welcoming address. 32 graduates and around 200 guests attended the ceremony.
Prof LIU Liang, Dean of School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU, said, in the past decade since the establishment of the HKSAR, the School has witnessed considerable advancement in legislation, regulation, formal training and scientific research of Chinese medicine. Prof Liu believes there is no doubt that the development of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong has been picking up speed in the past years, and it has attracted attention of the international community. The School has recently set up the Dr. & Mrs. Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine last year, an educational and academic endeavour with an introduction on the historical development of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong, and showcase the profound and expansive learning tradition behind it. Chinese medicine or an integrative approach in medical and healthcare treatments is being actively explored. They have also spared no efforts in fostering the incorporation of Chinese medicine into the public medical and healthcare framework of Hong Kong. Together with the new Chinese and western medicine integrated clinical centre opened in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2006 and the opening of Fanling Chinese Medicine Training and Research Centre that jointly established by HKBU, Hospital Authority and Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions Workers?Medical Clinics in April this year, the School now has a total number of eight CM clinics throughout the territory. They are gathering momentum to urge the government to open Chinese medicine clinics in the public hospitals of all the 18 districts of Hong Kong, and in phases, to establish Chinese medicine wards in public hospitals, which will eventually lead to the set up of a full-fledged Chinese medical hospital in Hong Kong.
Prof Liu said that they will need a new generation of Chinese medical professionals to convey to the world, in a scientific and systematic way, what Chinese medicine is all about. He also encouraged the graduates to commit themselves to the development of Chinese medicine in both Hong Kong and overseas.
