Mrs Hung Yeung Pong Wah
Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa (2015)

Mrs Hung Yeung Pong Wah was born in Hong Kong and attended St. Paul’s Co-educational College.  She is a devout Christian who has distinguished herself in social service and philanthropic activities.  Over the years, Mrs Hung has dedicated herself to services for the community and promoting social welfare causes.  The growth and development of young people, and care for infants and very young children, are services that are particularly dear to her heart.  She was for many years the Vice-President of the Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), and the Chairman of its Committee on Early Childhood Service.  She is a member of the Hong Kong Baptist Convention, and sat on the Management Committee of the Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School.  She also served as the Chairman of St. Paul’s Co-educational College Alumni Association, and was the founder of the Hing Yan Kindergarten, while also the supervisor of nine other kindergartens.  She is now a Deacon of the Hong Kong Baptist Church, a Director of the Hong Kong Hymn Society, and an Honorary Director of the Hong Kong YWCA.  She is also the Chairman of Shiu Pong Enterprises Limited and the Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation Limited.

For many years Mrs Hung, upholding the spirit of Hope, Faith and Love, has focused her charitable efforts on education, to which she has contributed significantly.  Her enthusiasm and support for promoting the cause of the Hong Kong Baptist University has been particularly well-known.  Many years ago in the last century, when the University was still operating as a private post-secondary college, Mrs Hung, together with her husband, the late Dr Hung Hin Shiu, began their long association with the Baptist University, and donated generously towards the construction cost of Shiu Pong Hall, the official residence of the President and Vice-Chancellor.  Upon entering into the new millennium, the contribution and support to us from Mrs. Hung and the charitable foundation she headed redoubled, and played an important part in the development of the University.  Facilities and services which benefitted from Mrs Hung’s munificence included campus development, the establishment of scholarships in the School of Chinese Medicine, and support to postgraduate students engaged in research work.  In 2011, the Hung family presented the University with a major gift which enabled the Institute of Creativity to be established.  The Institute has a mandate to enhance the University's research culture and facilitate the work of outstanding talents undertaking research at the University, and since its inception has demonstrated remarkable results in encouraging interdisciplinary research, and research on specific topics.  The love and affection of Mrs Hung and her family for HKBU are certainly not confined only to monetary donations, and their warmth of support is always felt when they show up at our functions such as the annual Scholarship and Bursary Donors’ Tea Reception.  Mrs Hung is an Honorary Trustee of the Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation and takes a keen interest in our growth and development, often benefitting the University with her wise counsels on fund-raising and other activities geared towards institutional advancement.

The support of Mrs Hung Yeung Pong Wah extends beyond the boundaries of Hong Kong.  At the University of Macau, Mrs Hung, in conjunction with the foundation overseen by her, endowed Shiu Pong College, a residential college on the new campus of the University at Hengquin, one where students may enjoy campus life in its full aspects.  The Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation also funds scholarship schemes at various other institutions of tertiary education in Hong Kong and the Mainland to aid students in their pursuit of a holistic education.

Mrs Hung Yeung Pong Wah always has charity and kindness in her heart, and her activities are invariably motivated by a great compassion for the well-being of society, and the common good.  She has been a staunch and long-time supporter of this University, with contributions significant and substantial.
