Demerit Point System

The Library's demerit point system is intended to discourage the following undesirable behaviours:

  • Eating, drinking, and/or displaying food and beverage, except in the Learning Commons on Level 2
  • Making excessive noise in open areas and causing disturbance to others
  • Borrowing a Library card from others
  • Lending a Library card to others
  • Defacing or intentionally damaging Library materials, equipment, and furnishings
  • Intentionally taking Library materials out of the Library without checking them out
  • Any other improper behaviour that may cause annoyance to other users and staff members in the Library or disrupt the normal routine of the Library

Users that engage in the above undesirable behaviours will be penalized according to the table below:

Making excessive noise in open areas and causing disturbance to others 5
Eating and/or drinking beverage, except in the Learning Commons (Level 2) 5
Borrowing or lending University I.D. card 20
Theft of library materials 20

The Library will take appropriate actions based on the number of demerit points accumulated according to the table below:

Cumulative Points Actions Taken by the Library
5 Name recorded.
10 Name recorded and warning letter issued to the user.
15 Name recorded and the user banned from borrowing library materials for 2 weeks.
≥ 20 Name recorded. User's School/Department and/or the Office of Student Affairs will be notified when necessary. User will be banned from entering the Library for 4 weeks.

Please note:

  • The demerit point balance will be reset to zero after reaching 20.
  • The Library reserves the right to amend the demerit point system. For enquiries, please contact the duty librarian at the Reference Desk.
