Search Tips
  • To retrieve ALL the records of dissertations and theses at the libraries of your choice, simply leave the
    search boxes blank
    , and click on the “Search” button (  ). You can also narrow your search by
    Department, Degree, Language, and Year.
     
  • Search words in ALL Search Fields are treated as keywords.
     
  • You cross-search the libraries of your choice by clicking the corresponding check boxes.
    The seven academic libraries that you can choose from include:
    • Chinese University of Hong Kong Libraries (CUHK),
    • City University of Hong Kong Library (CityU),
    • Hong Kong Baptist University Library (HKBU),
    • Hong Kong Polytechnic University Library (PolyU),
    • Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library (HKUST),
    • Lingnan University Library (LU),

1. Search Fields 
  • KEYWORD
    Use “KEYWORD” to find records where the search words are in any of the Author, Title, Subject,
    and NOTE fields, e.g. “primary school students” or “張愛玲”.
  • Author
    This search field finds keywords in the “Author” names. Use the author’s surname and given name, do not include initials. A search on “Joe Smith” is the same as “Smith, Joe”.
  • Title
    Use “Title” when searching keywords in the titles of the dissertation and theses.
  • Subject
    “Subject” search finds keywords in the subject headings of the records.
     

2. Operators

  • Boolean, proximity and adjacency operators are used to broaden and narrow your search.

    ADJACENCY Multiple words are searched together as one phrase. In some library systems, if no result is found, multiple words will be automatically searched with the operator “and”.

    TRUNCATION
    • Words may be right-hand truncated using an asterisk.
    • Use a single asterisk * to truncate from 1-5 characters.
    • Use a double asterisk ** for open-ended truncation. ** must be preceded by at least two characters.
    • Use a question mark ? to match any single character in the specified position in the word.
    comput* retrieves computer, computers, computation and computing, but NOT computations, computational, computerization

    comput** retrieves computer, computers, computation, computing, AND computations, computational, computerization

    BOOLEAN OPERATORS
    • Use "and" or "or" to specify multiple words in any field, any order.
    • Use "and not" to exclude words.
    • Parentheses group words together when using Boolean operators.
    (annotated bibliography) and child*

    (alaska or canada) and (adventure and not vacation)

    Chinese and novel

    (中國 or 台灣) and not 經濟
    PROXIMITY Use "near" to specify words within ten words of each other, in any order. Chinese near novel

    PARENTHESES
    • Use brackets to set the priorities in searching. Terms within the brackets will be processed first.
    • If no brackets are used, the priority order of operators is : AND NOT >> AND >> OR
    (reform or policy) and China and not politic*

    (經濟 or 金融) and 中國 and not 台灣

3. Narrow by other fields
  • Department
    • To search the departments in which the students were enrolled, you can choose the keyword of "Department" names from the pull-down menu.
    • "Department" search is not applicable to the University of Hong Kong Libraries (HKU).
       
     
  • Degree 
    • When you search using “ALL”, DTC finds all Master or Doctoral dissertations and theses.
    • A “Doctoral’ or “Master” search is a keyword search on degree titles recorded in the library catalog records. A search limit to “Doctoral” retrieves records containing the doctoral degree titles like “Ph.D.” or “D.Ed”…
    • The following table lists the doctoral degree types in different universities as of August 31, 2006.

    • A “Master” search retrieves all dissertations and theses written by students who were not enrolled in the doctoral degrees listed above.

      Note: If you find any discrepancy in the above table or know any new postgraduate degree programmes introduced in these 7 universities, please contact us and we will update the table and search parameters promptly.
       
     
  • Language 
    • “Language” refers to the languages used in the texts, appendices, excerpts, etc. of the dissertations and theses, please note that an English dissertation containing Chinese poetry is treated as a work in English and Chinese.
       
     
  • Year (yyyy) 
    • This refers to the years the dissertations and theses are submitted to the universities.
       
     

4. Sorting search results

  • Year
    • In reverse order by the year of submission to the universities.
  • Title
    • By alphabetical order for titles in western languages and by internal unicodes for titles in non-western languages.
  • Relevance
