Effective searches in Library-subscribed databases are somewhat different to those used in commercial search engines such as Google. Below are some tips that will help you find useful material in our databases:
Use
main words
only
Connect your search terms with
AND
Use the
truncation symbol (*)
for variant word endings
Think of
synonyms
for your search terms and try out different searches
By following the above tips, you can turn your research topic into several effective search strategies. For example:
The impact of air pollution on health
becomes
air pollut* AND health
smog AND health
air pollut* AND well-being
Trying different combinations of search terms will help ensure you find a comprehensive range of materials on a particular topic.
Most importantly,
Ask a Librarian
if you need help searching the Library's databases!
