The Faculty consists of seven departments: Education Studies, Geography, Government & International Studies, History, Physical Education, Social Work and Sociology. It provides students with a liberal education that enhances their personal, intellectual and professional development.

Centres have been developed in the Faculty to facilitate teaching and research activities at the University.
 
  
 

The Centre for Child Development was established in 1991. It aims at initiating and collaborating research and training in child development with the contextual framework of children, youth, families and schools.

 

The Dr. Stephen Hui Research Centre for Physical Recreation and Wellness was established in 1996 to enhance the linkage between research and instruction in the areas of health fitness and recreational management.

The European Documentation Centre, established in 1997, is supported by the Commission of the European Union, and houses official documents and other relevant materials on the European Union. It serves as an information service centre for local academic and business community.

 

 

The Hong Kong Energy Studies Centre was established in July 1998.  This is the first research centre specializing in energy issues in Hong Kong, which aims at coordinating with energy specialists and interested parties to hold seminars, conferences and workshops, and to carry out research on energy topics. 

The Centre of China Urban and Regional Studies was established in July 2001 and housed in the Geography Department with the aims of undertaking high quality collaborative research on urban and regional issues in contemporary China which involves the cultivation of academic exchange and cooperation around the world. 

 

The Modern History Research Centre was formally established in January 2002 and housed in the History Department. It focuses its the research areas on modern intellectual history, modern cultural history, sino-foreign relations, Hong Kong history, and regional history other than Hong Kong.

The Resource Centre for Liberal Studies in Schools was established in March 2005 with the aims of strengthening the teaching of liberal studies in teacher education and developing resources and support for the teaching of liberal studies both internally and externally.

 

The Centre for Youth Research and Practice was established in November 2005 and housed in the Social Work Department.  It aims to advance social work research in the areas of youth culture, youth policy & youth work practice and advance youth work practice through informed research in general, and empowerment and narrative practice for and with youth in particular.

 

The Centre for Olympic Studies was formally established in March 2007 and located at the European Documentation Centre.  It aims to promote Olympism and Olympic Education in Hong Kong and serve the sports professionals and the general public, especially during the leading up to the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing.

 

The CIE Wellness Promotion Centre was formally established in June 2008 and located in the Shek Mun Campus.  It aims to enhance the quality of life of Hong Kong people through various quality wellness programmes.

The Centre for Geo-Computation Studies was established in June 2009 and based in the Geography Department. It aims to develop inter-department and inter-institutional collaboration in fields of computerised geographical analysis.

The Comparative Governance and Policy Research Centre was formally established in June 2009 and based in the Government & International Studies Department. It aims to provide an institutional, organisational and managerial platform for policy related international comparative research and for the dissemination of research results.

In view of the Centre restructuring, the School Administration and Management System Training and Research Unit established in 1995 has been re-titled as Centre for the Advancement of Social Sciences Research (CASR) with effect from 25 August 2010.  The CASR aims to engender inter-departmental collaboration, synergize new inter-disciplinary research within and outside the Faculty, and facilitate knowledge transfer from the University to the wider community.
