An Examination of Overseas Chinese Communication
Studies
Guo-Ming Chen *
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper was to examine the overseas Chinese
communication studies and further propose a direction for the future
development of Chinese communication studies in Chinese societies.
First, the author used tree as a metaphor to define the trunk and
the six main branches of the field of communication studies. The
communication tree was employed to reflect the incompleteness of
communication studies in Chinese societies. Second, the author
separately examined the history and research orientation of the
three well-established Chinese communication associations, including
CCA, ACCS, and CCS. Lastly, the paper argued that under the impact
of globalization, it is necessary for domestic and overseas Chinese
communication scholars and associations to cooperate and integrate
their efforts in order to survive and make contributions to the
global society.
