Admission Requirements

 

 a)

 

 Master of Arts in Chinese Literature, Language and Culture

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Chinese Literature, Language and Culture programme degree should possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's degree with Second Class Honours or above in Chinese from a recognized university or comparable institution; OR

 

ii)

 

a general degree plus relevant working experience; OR

 

iii)

a qualification deemed to be equivalent.

 

 b)

Master of Arts in Communication   

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Communication degree programme should possess:

 

i)

 

a Bachelor's degree with honours from a recognized university or comparable institution;

 

ii)

 

relevant professional experience will be favourably considered.

 

Applicants should submit a 500-word essay outlining the applicant's academic interests and objectives, and a sample of publication or research paper written by the applicant, if any.  Short-listed applicants will be interviewed.

 

 c)

Master of Arts in Language Studies  

Applicants seeking admission to the MA in Language Studies degree programme should possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; OR

 

ii)

 

a qualification deemed to be equivalent.

 

Applicants are normally expected to have competence in both spoken and written Chinese and English.

 

Appropriately qualified applicants may be interviewed in order to elicit further information such as interests, motivation, communication skills, language proficiency, maturity and suitability.

 

Mature students and other candidates who lack the above qualifications may be admitted on a case-by-case basis. A qualifying examination may be required. 

 

 d)      

Master of Arts/Postgraduate Diploma/Postgraduate Certificate in Music 

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MA/PgDip/PgCert in Music programme should normally possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's degree in Music with at least second class honours from a recognized university or comparable institution; OR

 

ii)

qualifications deemed to be equivalent.

 

 e)      

Master of Business Administration
 

Applicants seeking admission to the MBA degree programme should possess:

 

Full-time Mode

i)

a Bachelor 's degree (in any discipline) from a recognized university or comparable institution; OR qualification deemed to be equivalent;

 

ii)

at least 2 years of relevant work experience. Those without 2 years of relevant work experience have to take an non-credit earning Foundation Module within the last 2 weeks of August;

 

iii)

an acceptable score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Applicants with 8 or more years of relevant work experience may apply for exemption from taking GMAT; AND

 

iv) a satisfactory performance in the selection interview.
The Admission Panel will assess appropriately qualified applicants’ motivation, maturity, communication skills, language proficiency, and suitability for the Course at interview. Overseas applicants will be contacted to schedule for a phone interview. Applicants may be exempted from taking up to four core subjects (eight credit units), provided they have taken similar or equivalent subjects at postgraduate level (and achieved a satisfactory grade) within the past five years.  

 

Part-time Mode

i)

a Bachelor 's degree (in any discipline) from a recognized university or comparable institution; OR qualification deemed to be equivalent;

 

ii)

at least 2 years of relevant work experience;

 

iii)

an acceptable score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Applicants with 8 or more years of relevant work experience may apply for exemption from taking GMAT; AND

 

iv) a satisfactory performance in the selection interview.

 Master of Chinese Medicine 

 

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Chinese Medicine degree programme should be:

 

i)

holders of the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine or Bachelor of Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine degree recognized by the School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU, or applicants with equivalent qualifications; OR

 

ii)

registered Chinese medicine practitioners in Hong Kong.

 

All applicants have to pass the admission examination for "Master of Chinese Medicine" arranged by the School.

 

Language requirements:

Applicants must have obtained Grade E or above in Chinese Language and Culture in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination, or passed the Chinese Language test (including an interview) arranged by the School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU.

 

 g)      

Master of Education 

 

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Education degree programme should possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university or equivalent; AND

ii)

a postgraduate certificate/diploma in education or equivalent, and/or relevant professional experience working with children and adolescents.

 

 h)      

Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television & Digital Media 

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MFA in Film, Television & Digital Media degree programme should possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized university; AND

 

ii) a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (for paper based examination) or 213 (for computer based examination) is required for admission.  A minimum IELTS result of Level 6 can be used as an alternative to the TOEFL score (This requirement is only applicable to students originating from countries/institutions where English is NOT the major medium of instruction.); AND

iii)

strong evidence of academic aptitude and strong interest in creative activities.

i)

Master of Public Administration  

 

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Public Administration degree programme should possess:

 

i)

 a Bachelor's degree (in any discipline) from a recognized university or comparable institution; OR

 

ii) a qualification deemed to be equivalent.
Qualified applicants will be interviewed to assess their motivation and suitability for the course.

 j)      

Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry  

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Analytical Chemistry degree programme should possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree with honours in Chemistry or in the Physical and Life Sciences, such as Biochemistry, Environmental Science, Food Science, Pharmacology, etc, where a strong emphasis is placed on analytical techniques and measurements from a recognized university or comparable institution; OR

 

ii)

a qualification deemed to be equivalent.

 

Applicants who do not possess a formal degree qualification but have substantial documented relevant and working experience in Analytical Chemistry may be considered.

 

To ensure that all the students have the appropriate standard in analytical chemistry before they proceed to the MSc course, non-chemistry major and non-standard entrant candidates are required to take a proficiency test soon after they are admitted into the course. If they pass the proficiency test, they can proceed directly to the MSc course in the fall semester. However, if they fail the proficiency test, they are required to take the remedial courses designed by the course team in the summer preceding their enrolment in the fall semester to make up for their deficiency in analytical chemistry.  The proficiency test will be administered using the American Chemical Society (ACS) Graduate Level Placement Examination in Analytical Chemistry and the remedial courses will primarily rely on the self-learning computer-based packages.

 

k)      

Master of Science in Applied Accounting and Finance  New

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Applied Accounting and Finance degree programme should normally possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's  degree with honors in business from a recognized university or comparable institution, or a professional qualification deemed to be equivalent; or

 

a Bachelor's  degree in other disciplines if they have obtained relevant experience and/or training in accounting of finance field; AND

 

ii)

a minimum of three years of relevant work experience.

 

Proof of English proficiency is required for applicants whose first degrees were obtained from non-English-medium institutions. Applicants will be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Students with non-business degree and lack basic training/experience in accounting and finance would be required to take, at their extra cost, an intensive foundation subject which will be offered on 4-full days (e.g., four Saturdays or Sundays) before the commence of the MSc programme.

Application for exemption of a subject will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Only subjects completed at master’s degree level or equivalent and with similar contents can be used to claim for exemption. Each student can receive exemptions for no more than two subjects. Students are required to pay the full tuition fees for exempted subjects. 

l)      

Master of Science in Corporate Governance and Directorship  New

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Corporate Governance and Directorship degree programme should normally possess:

 

i)

a bachelor’s degree with honours in business from a recognized university or comparable institution, or an equivalent qualification (such as professional qualification in accounting, finance, company secretarial practices or law); OR

 

a bachelor’s degree in other disciplines if they have obtained relevant experience and/or training in corporate governance and directorship or related fields (such as accounting, company secretarial practices, finance, law, management and so on); AND

 

ii)

a minimum of three years of relevant working experience.

 

Students with non-business degree and with insufficient basic training/experience in finance and accounting may be required to take, at their extra cost, an intensive foundation subject in corporate finance and accounting which will be offered on 4 full days (e.g., 4 Saturdays or Sundays) before the commencement of the programme.

Application for exemption of a subject will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Only subjects completed at the advanced university level or equivalent and with similar contents can be used to claim for exemption. Each student can receive exemptions for no more than two subjects. Students are required to pay the full tuition fees for exempted subjects.

m)      

Master of Science in Environmental & Public Health Management  

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Environmental & Public Health Management degree programme should normally possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's  degree from a recognized university or comparable institutions in any other disciplines; OR

 

ii)

a qualification deemed to be equivalent.

 

Applicants such as higher diploma holders who do not possess a formal degree qualification, but have substantial documented relevant and working experience in environmental management (normally 5 years or above) may be considered.  Applicants may be required to prove their language ability in English by means of interviews and/or written examination or, for those not available in Hong Kong, by means of performance on acceptable language indicators such as having a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based), or the Member of Institute of Linguists (MIL) examinations.

 

n)

Master of Science in Information Technology Management New

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Information Technology Management course should normally:

 

i)

possess a Bachelor degree in science, engineering, business or other relevant fields from a recognized university or comparable institution or a qualification deemed to be equivalent; and

 

ii)

be proficient in English. Applicants not using English as the medium of learning in their Bachelor’s degree course are required to provide evidence of good English proficiency (e.g., they have taken English proficiency subjects in the universities, or obtained satisfactory results in TOEFL or the Standard English Test in the Mainland).

 

Applicants having other qualifications but substantial experience in information technology will also be considered. Applicants may be interviewed to determine their suitability for studying the course.

 

o)

Master of Science in Strategic Human Resources Management 

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MSc in Strategic Human Resources Management degree programme should normally possess:

 

i)

a good first degree or equivalent, in any discipline, from a recognized university; OR a qualification deemed to be equivalent; AND

 

ii)

usually a minimum of five years of management/professional experience.

 

p)

Master of Social Sciences (Contemporary China Studies)

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc (Contemporary China Studies) degree programme:

 

i)

should hold a Bachelor's degree, or qualification of equivalent standard from another university or comparable institution;

 

ii)

should pass the interview; and

 

iii)

will be given preference with background in social science and/or humanities.

 

q)      

Master of Social Sciences in European Studies (Sino-European Relations)

 

The course is open to applicants with a wide range of backgrounds.  To be eligible for admission, the applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc in European Studies & Sino-European Relations degree programme must have a recognized Bachelor's degree or equivalent university degree.

 

By exemption, applicants with substantial professional experience in private companies or public bodies, especially when their activities deal with Sino-European relations, may also be considered for admission.  A written examination may in some cases be required.

 

Applicants short-listed are called for an interview.  Overseas applicants are interviewed by phone.  They are expected to expose their motivation for the programme, to indicate their research interests and to provide evidence of their capacity for analysis and for writing.  They are encouraged to send a motivation letter prior to the interview.

 

Applicants are required to provide evidence of English proficiency, as attested by a bachelor's degree taught in English, a minimum of two years of regular use of English in professional activities, or a score of 550 in TOEFL or 6 in IELTS, or equivalent.

 

r) Master of Social Sciences in Media Management New

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc in Media Management degree course should possess: 

(a) a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or comparable institution;

 

(b) a TOEFL score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based), or 7 in IELTS, or C in GCSE/GC for all non-local applicants whose first degree is from a non-English teaching university;

 

(c)  a related degree plus 2 years of professional experience or a general degree with more than 2 years professional experience.  Exceptional fresh graduates, with extensive prior professional experience, may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants should submit a 500-word essay outlining the applicant’s academic interests and professional objectives, and a sample of selected publications or projects by the applicant, if any.  Short-listed applicants will be interviewed in English.

 

s)      

Master of Social Sciences in Sport & Leisure Management 

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc in Sport & Leisure Management degree programme should normally possess:

i)

a Bachelor's degree in physical education, sport/exercise science, sport/recreation/leisure/recreation management or other areas such as communication, tourism and hotel management from a recognized university (usually a good second class degree is required, but applicants with outstanding work experience may be considered); AND

 

ii)

preferably with a minimum of two years of relevant work experience or a number of equivalent years of experience involved in sport and leisure management or administration; OR

 

ii)

a qualification deemed to be equivalent.

 

t)      

Master of Social Sciences in Youth Counselling  

 

Applicants seeking admission to the MSocSc (Youth Counselling) degree programme should:

 

i)

possess a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university or equivalent;

ii)

have at least two years of working experience with young people; AND

 

iii)

normally possess some background knowledge in psychology, human development, guidance, and/or other related subjects.

 

Appropriately qualified applicants will be interviewed to ensure their motivation and suitability for pursing training in youth counselling.

 

u)      

Master of of Social Work  

 

Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Social Work degree programme should possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's degree in Social Work* from a recognized university or equivalent; AND

 

ii)

at least 2 years of post qualification work experience, preferably in social work.

 

*

 

Usually a good second class degree is required, but applicants with outstanding work experience may be considered.

 

v)      

Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Full-time)

 

Applicants seeking admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Education should possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university or equivalent; AND

 

ii)

demonstrated language proficiency in Chinese and English as recognized by the Department of Education Studies

 

Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process. Reference will be made to communicative skills, language proficiency, maturity and motivation of the candidate.

 

Applicants applying for Chinese or English subjects may be required to sit for a language proficiency test.

 

w)      

 Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Part-time)

 

Applicants seeking admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Education should possess:

 

i)

a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university or equivalent; AND

 

ii)

a full-time secondary school teacher status#.

 

Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process. Reference will be made to communicative skills, language proficiency, maturity and motivation, specialism and teaching experience.   Students may be provisionally accepted at the time of application, but they should have their full-time school teacher status confirmed before registration for the course.

 

Applicants applying for Chinese and English subjects may be required to sit a a language proficiency test.

#  Subjects taught should include the specializing subject following the norms set by the Department of Education Studies.  Applicants who do not have a full-time teaching status will be considered on a case-by-case basis and, if admitted, have to fulfill placement requirements stipulated by the Department.

Postgraduate Diploma in Education - Subject Teaching and Subject Knowledge Stream
Applicants seeking admission to the course should possess:
i) a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university or equivalent; and
ii) a postgraduate certificate/diploma in education or equivalent in a subject other than the major specializing subject; and

ii)

a full-time teacher status#.

 

Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process. Reference will be made to communicative skills, language proficiency, maturity and motivation, specialism and teaching experience.   Students may be provisionally accepted at the time of application, but they should have their full-time school teacher status confirmed before registration for the course.

 

Applicants applying for Chinese and English subjects may be required to sit a a language proficiency test.

z)
Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources Management New

Applicants must have a recognized Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent professional qualification. Applicants holding diplomas may gain admission provided that they posses a minimum of four years of working experience. The English language proficiency requirement applies to all applicants who received education in language other than English. Proof of proficiency in English must be provided to admission. Interview will be scheduled with selected applicants who meet the requirements for admission to the programme.

 

 

 

Language Requirements

Applicants, depending on requirements of the course to which they have applied, may be required to prove their language abilities in English and/or Chinese by means of an interview, or, for applicants from outside Hong Kong, by means of performance in a test to show acceptable language proficiency, such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Member of Institute of Linguists (MIL) examination. The TOEFL institution code of the Hong Kong Baptist University is 9467.

 

Transfer Students

Under normal circumstances, applicants who are studying for a master's degree at the Baptist University or other institutions, seeking transfer to any master's degree courses at the Baptist University will not be considered.

 

Double Registration

Unless otherwise approved by the University, registered candidates are normally not permitted to register part-time or full-time for any other qualification either at the Baptist University itself or at any local institution of higher learning.  Candidates breaching this regulation are subject to discontinuation of their studies at the University.
