Application Channels/Programme Information
Q If I would like to apply for admission on the strength of my HKALE results, how should I apply for admission?
A If you apply for admission on the strength of your HKALE results, you must apply through JUPAS. Please visit the JUPAS website at http://www.jupas.edu.hk for details.

Q Can I apply through JUPAS as well as to HKBU directly?
A If you are applying for admission on the basis of qualifications other than your Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) results such as GCSE/ GCE, International Baccalaureate Programme (IB), overseas examination results, Higher Diploma, Associate Degree, Degree, you are advised to apply to HKBU directly. Please visit our Non-JUPAS website at http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/~ar/admissions/nj.htm for details. Please note that if you make applications to both JUPAS and HKBU, NONE of your applications will be considered.

Q Should I apply to HKBU through JUPAS if I am currently enrolled in a full-time government-funded programme at another tertiary institution and wish to make the application on the strength on my HKALE results?
A No. You should not apply through JUPAS. If you are currently enrolled as a full-time or sandwich degree student in any one of the eight JUPAS institutions (even if you are applying on the strength of your current or past HKALE results), you are required to make direct application to the University. Please visit our Non-JUPAS website at http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/~ar/admissions/nj.htm for details.

Q Where can I obtain more information on HKBU study programmes?
A Please visit our JUPAS website at http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/~ar/admissions/jupas.htm for details of programme description and entrance requirements, etc.

Admission Criteria/Quota
Q What is the assessment weighting for HKALE and HKCEE subjects when admission is considered?
A The assessment weighting for HKALE and HKCEE subjects varies with study programmes. In general, for study programmes that do not require interviews, the assessment weighting for HKALE subjects and HKCEE subjects is around 70-80% and 20-30% respectively.

Q What subject(s) carries more weight when admission is considered?
A The assessment weighting for HKALE/HKCEE subjects varies with programmes. For programmes with preferred HKALE and/or HKCEE subjects indicated in the entrance requirements, the preferred subjects probably carry more weight. Please note that your HKALE and HKCEE grades alone do not determine whether you will be admitted to a study programme.  Other factors that will take into consideration  include information contained in your application form, interviews (if applicable), overall grades achieved by other applicants in the current year, and the number of applicants applies to the programme, etc.

Q Will I be admitted if I obtained excellent HKALE results but failed in AS Level Use of English?
A No. An applicant will not be considered for admission if he/she has failed to meet the University admissions requirements. To be eligible for admission, applicants are required to satisfy both the University and Programme entrance requirements. However, admission is on a competitive basis, satisfying the minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee admission. For details of University/Programme admissions requirements, please click here.

Q Is there any pre-set quota for JUPAS, JUPAS sub-systems/schemes and Non-JUPAS?
A No. There is no pre-set quota for JUPAS, JUPAS sub-systems/schemes and Non-JUPAS applicants. Applicants from different schemes are considered equally, better qualified and motivated applicants who possess outstanding all-rounded performance will have better chance of admission.

Results obtained in Combined Sittings
Q Does the University consider  HKCEE/HKALE results obtained in different sittings?
A HKBU does consider HKALE/HKCEE results obtained in multiple sittings. In cases of multiple sittings, the best 2 sittings would be combined when admission is considered.
For HKCEE, students must obtain Grade E or above in at least 6 subjects including Chinese Language (or French or German) and English Language (Syllabus B), with at least 5 subjects in a single sitting. Or 5 subjects in a single sitting are acceptable if the total of these 5 grades is not less than 8 points. (Grade A to E shall be given points 5 to 1 respectively.)
For HKALE, a minimum of Grade E or above in Use of English, Chinese Language and Culture, plus 2 AL subjects or 1 AL subject and 2 AS subjects obtained in a single sitting or any two sittings are required.

Q Will I, being a Form 5 / Form 7 repeater, be 'disadvantaged' when applying for admission?
A Normally, repeaters will not be 'disadvantaged' when admission is considered, public examinations results obtained in multiple sittings are considered equally.

HKCEE English Language (Syllabus B) Equivalent Subjects
Q What is the equivalent grade for Grade C in HKCEE English Language (Syllabus A)?
A Grade C in HKCEE English Language (Syllabus A) is considered equivalent to Grade E in HKCEE English Language (Syllabus B).

Q Can the subject 'Use of English' be replaced by other examinations such as GCE, GCSE and TOEFL?
A Yes. The following public examination results are recognized by the University.

For equivalence to Grade E in AS Use of English:
i) a score of 520 (paper-based) or 190 (computer-based) in TOEFL
ii) a score of 6 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Academic Level
iii) grade C in GCSE/GCE O-Level English
iv) grade III in Joint Matriculation Board (JMB) University Test in English (or a pass in the NEAB University Entrance Test in English for Speakers of Other Languages)

ii) a score of 7 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Academic Level
iii) grade C in GCSE/GCE O-Level English

Interview/Test Arrangements
Q Do all HKBU programmes require interviews/tests?
A No. Not all programmes require interviews/tests. Interview/test arrangement may vary with programmes and may change every year.  Please click to view the interview/test arrangement for 2006 JUPAS exercise.

Q Is it necessary to place those programmes that require interview in my Band A choices?
A Selection criteria for interviews vary with programmes. Banding of programme choices alone does not determine whether you are invited to interviews. Other factors come into consideration such as your public examination results, information contained in your application form, overall grades achieved by other applicants, and the number of applicants applies to the programme, etc. However, when the number of applicants far exceeds the interview quota, we may only invite those applicants who have placed the particular programme in higher band (majority from Band A applicants and a few from Band B applicants) for interviews.

Q When will the admission interviews/tests be held?
A Admission interviews/tests will be held before and/or after the announcement of HKALE results. To view the interview/test arrangement for 2006 JUPAS exercise, please click here.

Q How would I be notified if I am selected for interviews?
A We will email/mail you the interview letter which contains all interview details, e.g. date, time, venue, etc. Please ensure that your email and postal addresses with the JUPAS Office are updated and correct.

Q What can I do if I cannot attend the interview arranged by the University?
A If you are unable to attend an interview or test, please email or call us at 3411 5027 / 3411 7358 in advance so that alternative arrangements may be made for you, if possible.
