Sharing by Dennis S.H. Yau (Year 3 ECON)

Twenty-three students from Economics and China Studies Majors, together with our tour leaders, Dr. Bill Hung and Dr. C.Y. Sin, joined a 7-day study tour in Shanghai this year. I had a wonderful and fruitful stay in Shanghai from 1-7 Jan 2006. The scheduled activities of the trip were very diversified. Not only could we understand more about China, but also we could experience the Chinese culture by visiting the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai City-Planning Exhibition Hall, some state-owned and private corporations, as well as meeting with students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Fudan University and gaining greater insight into economic phenomena.

Among these valuable study activities, I would like to share my experience with my fellow BBA students. Firstly, I was impressed by the rapid economic development in Shanghai as seen through my visits to the Shanghai History Museum and Huangpu River. The former was just like going through a history tunnel, and the latter revealed an excellent improvement in the Shanghai economy.

Secondly, the visit at a successful state-owned enterprise “Baoshan Steel Works” was also a memorable experience. I had the opportunity to observe closely the whole process of steel production. Since the enterprise was operating at a high profit margin with foreign trade business, it was worthwhile for me to learn from them and to apply what we had learnt from classes.

Thirdly, Shanghai Jiao Tong University was a very interesting place to visit. I could know more about Shanghai's economy, wage level, quality of life and employment situation through my interaction with the local students. I also realized that many political leaders were graduates of this University.

In conclusion, this 7-day trip broadened my horizons concerning the Shanghai economic development, as well as enhanced my understanding on Shanghaiese culture and its competitive advantages.

七日六夜的上海交流團在2006年1月1 日至1 月7 日順利進行。同行的除了廿三位中研經濟及經濟系的同學外，還有洪雲星博士和冼芻博士。

七日之內我們到過許多地方，體會到上海懷舊又現代化的一面。印象最深刻的是參觀寶山鋼鐵廠。除了是因為當日的天氣只有零下三度之外，更因為香港並沒有這樣有規模的鋼鐵廠，能夠有如此的機會讓我參觀一下，真是非常難得。

另外上海不少地方都很像香港，所以說上海是香港的競爭對手實在沒錯。例如上海的淮海路有如香港的柏麗大道，上海浦東機場更是媲美香港國際機場，還有在上海城市規劃館我們看到的現代化規劃建設，都好像說上海就是中國先發達的城市。

除了看到上海現代化的一面，我們還到過上海一些古色古香的景點，例如豫園和錦溪。這些地方都有很長很長的歷史，當然，我們都不會浪費這些拍照的好機會啦。

七天之內到過的地方實在太多，要一一詳述，恐怕多寫幾篇也未完。這次的旅程不單止讓我們更認識上海，也擴大了我們的眼界，加上兩位教授和師母的照顧講解，令我們學得更多，看得更多。這次真是一個難忘的旅程。
