EDUCATION:

2011-2014 PhD. candidate in Marine Biology and Ecology. ¡@
¡@ I am a full time student at Hong Kong Baptist University and I am also enrolled at The Swire Institute of Marine Science of The University of Hong Kong. The aim of my research is to better understand the biology (e.g. reproductive patterns, recruitment, mortality and growth) of the commercially exploited sea urchin Anthocidaris crassispina. Base on this empirical study, I will generate a demographic model comparing the population growth rates of two in no-take areas and two in areas open to fishing. I will provide essential information for the development of a management plan for this urchin for the first time.

¡@ I made my Masters at Laval University in Quebec City, Canada. I conducted field experiments to examine responses of the sea urchin Tetrapygus niger to sea star predators Heliaster helianthus and Meyenaster gelatinosus, which involved organizing two summer field seasons in Chile.

¡@ I made my bachelor at the University Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Bogotˆh, Colombia. My thesis was performed at Institute of Marine and Coastal Research (INVEMAR) in Santa Marta, Colombia. I evaluated whether the deep-sea coral communities fulfill the criteria for a Marine Protected Areas in Colombia. Moreover, I generated a spatial prediction of six habitat-forming species of deep-sea corals which create particular conditions favoring increased faunal diversity in the marine reserve.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Understand the mechanisms and processes that determine the structure and organization of marine communities (specifically, the factors that permit coexistence of species in different types of communities), and the identification and application of scientific criteria for the conservation of marine ecosystems and the establishment of marine protected areas. I am particularly interested in studying the interactions between the environment and marine life and what effect natural and anthropogenic impacts have at population and community levels.
