HKBU students continue to reap a rich harvest
of prizes and recognition for their skills and achievements
in a broad range of activities. Nobel Cho (China Business
Studies, Year 2) and Lawrence Lui (College of International
Education, Year 2) won Outstanding Services Awards for Tertiary
Students 2005-2006, while Karen Wong (Chinese Language &
Literature, Year 3) was declared champion at the Inter-Universities
Speech Contest 2006 -- Cantonese Session.
Nobel and Lawrence were among 20 winners
of the awards, which are conferred for academic achievement,
voluntary service or leadership potential. The event was jointly
organised by the Hong Kong Student Services Association and
the Hong Kong Outstanding Tertiary Students' Service Association.
Nobel and Lawrence won their awards for their
long-standing records of service to the community. Nobel has
been actively involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities
and community work since she was in secondary school. Last
December, she was a volunteer at the World Trade Organisation
Hong Kong Ministerial Conference, an experience that inspired
her to develop further her leadership skills and to motivate
more people to care about society.
Lawrence joined the Boy Scouts in secondary
school, and is now a scout instructor. In 2004, he joined
an ambulance team of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. He believes
that social service means much more than just helping the
needy: it also enhances the personal development of those
who perform the service.
At the Inter-Universities Speech Contest,
organised by the Placement Centre of the HKBU Student Affairs
Office and the Lions' Club of Metropolitan Hong Kong, Karen
defeated contestants from the seven other UGC-funded institutions.
Her convincing argument in favour of banning smoking in public
cited the immense economic benefits to be derived from such
a ban.
