students and HKBU Delegates Role-play Diplomats at Harvard
National Model United Nations 2005 |
Yang Chunyan (Year 2 ACCT) and Gao Guiwei
(Year 3 FIN) together with a delegation of 15 HKBU students
were selected to experience the world stage when they took
part in Harvard University's prestigious model United Nations
conference in Boston, USA, in mid February. The HKBU team
was the only delegation from a Hong Kong university at the
event this year and represented the Republic of Finland at
11 committees on international law, disarmament and international
security, humanitarianism and culture, politics and decolonization.
A commissioning ceremony was held on 2 February
2005 (Wed) and officiated by Mr. Pauli Makela, Consul General
of the Republic of Finland in Hong Kong, and Professor Ng
Ching-Fai, President and Vice-Chancellor.
The HNMUN 2005 conference, scheduled from
17 to 20 February 2005, attracted more than 2,000 students
from 135 universities and colleges around the world which
represented 185 nations and territories in conference role
play.
The team was selected from more than 60 applicants through
rigorous screening.
Intensive training was organized by the Office
of Student Affairs from November 2004 to February 2005. Advisors
to the delegation were Dr. Michael DeGolyer, Associate Professor
of Government and International Studies, and Mr. Timothy Hamlett,
Associate Professor of Journalism.
