Department of Economics hosted 6th Annual Conference of the Asia-Pacific Economic Association

The Department of Economics hosted the Sixth Annual Conference of the Asia-Pacific Economic Association on July 8-9, 2010. About 130 overseas economists from more than 20 countries joined nearly 30 local counterparts in this major event to present and discuss their research results. Congratulations to 3 MBA alumni have been recently appointed for senior government official positions

Three of our alumni have recently been appointed senior government official positions and received recognitions for their contributions. Alumna Gong Er Zhen (MBA 2001) was appointed as the first female Vice Mayor of Guangzhou by the Guangzhou Municipality on June 30, 2010 at its committee meeting. Alumna Gong has extensive leadership experience and boasts outstanding career accomplishments. >>More

 

Alumni dinner of Department of Marketing and China Business Studies and Marketing Alumni Association

The Department of Marketing co-organized its alumni dinner with the China Business Studies and Marketing Alumni Association on May 29, 2010. More than 70 alumni, students and teaching staff participated in this heart warming reunion. Many took a stroll down memory lane and updated each other on work and personal happenings, while enjoying a gourmet dinner of a diversity of dishes. >>More

 

MBA Alumni Association Forum Series

The Hong Kong MBA Alumni Association hosted a series of forums on June 19, 2010 with an aim to provide a platform for our MBA students and alumni to widen their horizons. The first part of the forum mainly focused on the career skill sets MBA full-time students would need to be prepared for their future careers. Mr Paul Yeung, Ex-President of CIMA HK Division and an experienced banker of a major European bank and Mr Lawrence Yip, Executive Vice President of The Chamber of Hong Kong Logistic Industry and Managing Director or Prorsun Group Holdings Ltd were invited to share with the participants some smart tips in seizing business and career opportunities in HK and on the Mainland. The second part of the forum focused on the business scorecard. Dr. Li Wing Sun, Teaching Fellow of the School of Accounting and Finance of Hong Kong Polytechnic University was the speaker. He shared the successful case of Ericsson using the balance scorecard to steer business changes.

 

MBAAA joined the 11th MBA Forum of China in Hefei

The MBA alumni association joined the 11th MBA Forum of China at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei. The forum attracted about 1,000 participants from 200 institutions on the Mainland and overseas. Entitled “Innovation · Low Carbon Economy”, the forum aimed at arousing in participants an awareness of developments in the social economy and the ecological environment, and the importance of a low carbon life. Mr Jack Watt, President of the Hong Kong MBA Alumni Association, was invited to be one of the speakers at its “MBA alumni forum”.

Experience Vibrant University Life at HKBU! BBA holds Summer Camp for Secondary School Students

A total of 118 Form 6 students from 45 local secondary schools sampled the vibrant facets of university life on July 15-16 at an overnight Summer Camp organised by BBA programme. Participants got a flavour of university life through a series of activities including workshops on financial management, marketing strategies and presentation skills delivered by BBA teaching faculty, a sharing session with recent BBA graduates, a campfire gathering, and last but not least, a night’s stay at the HKBU Student Residence Hall. Seminars on the BBA Programme and out-of-classroom learning opportunities were arranged for participants to learn more about HKBU’s unique features.


MBA News

MBA students headed for Stockholm for further studies

The School partnered with the School of Business at Stockholm University to offer an opportunity for our MBA students to pursue an additional master’s degree upon graduation. Our graduates can be exempted from taking half of the required coursework for the second Master’s degree and the tuition fee is waived. This year, 2 students from the full-time class, Jocelyn Pan and Aishwarya Paliwal, will travel to Stockholm to pursue their second Master’s degree.

BCom(Hon) in Accountancy student won the Award for Excellence on Citi Community Intern Program 2009

Ms. Kan Ka Man (4th from left), BCom(Hon) ACCT, won the Award for Excellence of Citi Community Intern Program 2009. The Recognition Ceremony was held on May 31, 2010. The award is to recognise students majoring in Business Studies at Hong Kong universities who have contributed their knowledge and expertise to non-profit organizations. The ultimate aim of the program is to cultivate a sense of Corporate Social Responsibility in students and prepare them for careers as business professionals with a broadened understanding of the community.

MPhil student paper was selected by Asian Finance Association International Conference

MPhil student Ms. Sanry Che presented her paper "Initial day return and underpricing cost in advance payment initial public offerings" on June 30 at the Asian Finance Association International Conference held at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The paper is among the 166 selected papers out of 455 total submissions.

 



China Business Studies Society’s Study Tour 2010

The China Business Studies Society organised the Beijing Academic and Culture Study Tour for their students from June 26 - 30, 2010. During the trip, 12 participants visited outstanding enterprises such as the Yanjing Beer Enterprise and the Beijing Hyundai Motor Company to learn more about their company culture, management strategies and business development plans. They also gathered and had friendly sharing sessions with students of Peking University and Tsinghua University.

 

Institute for Enterprise Development co-organised two Business Field Studies in Taiwan with China MBA Classes

The Institute for Enterprise Development co-organised two business field studies in Taiwan with the China MBA Programme of the School in June 2010. 25 students from Guangzhou led by Dr. Vivienne LUK, Director of IED, and 38 students from Shenzhen and Huadong led by Dr. Y.C. NG, Associate Director of IED, visited successful enterprises in Taiwan such as Hey-Song Corporation (黑松股份有限公司), Portwell (瑞傳科技股份有限公司), Gudeng Precision Industrial Co., Ltd. (家登精密工業股份有限公司), Globe Union Industrial Corporation (成霖集團) and HCT Transportation (新竹貨運). The students also attended seminars at the National Taipei University introducing Taiwan’s social and economic situation. The business field studies provided valuable opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of Taiwan’s business environment.

Delegations Hosted by IIBD Secretariat

IIBD Secretariat received many guests from different institutions who visited HKBU. They met with the IIBD Director, Associate Director and professors from the School of Business, HKBU to explore possibilities for further cooperation. IIBD Case Competition 2010 on Corporate Sustainability

This year, the Competition is organised by IIBD and Chinese Businesses Case Research Centre with the theme of Corporate Sustainability.

In its first round, the Competition received 39 case analysis reports from 39 universities in 11 countries were received. Five finalist teams will be chosen and invited to Hong Kong to compete for awards in the final round of the Competition on November 17, 2010.
