Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine (CGCM)

In pursuit of advancing the field of Chinese medicine to benefit human kind, an international meeting has been organized by the Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong on December 14-15, 2003. The meeting was attended by representatives of sixteen leading institutions in traditional Chinese Medicine and chaired by Prof. Tommy Yung-chi Cheng, Henry Bronson Professor of Pharmacology, Yale University School of Medicine, USA. During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by all 16 institutions to form a Consortium for Globalisation of Chinese Medicine (CG-CM).

The Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine (CGCM) is positioned as a global, non-profit, non-discriminatory and non-political organization, with a mission of advancing the field of Chinese herbal medicine to benefit human kind through joint efforts of the academic institutions, industries and regulatory agencies around the world.

Goals of CGCM

  1. Develop platform technologies required for advancing Chinese herbal Medicine by joint efforts.
  2. Facilitate the interaction and collaboration among different institutes in advancing Chinese herbal medicine by sharing information.
  3. Promote high quality research and development of Chinese herbal medicine internationally.
  4. Assist industry which is interested in developing Chinese herbal medicine products and regulatory agencies around the world.
  5. Bring Chinese herbal medicine into cornerstone for developing future medicine (West meets East).

Membership

Since its establishment in December 2003 by 16 Founding Institutions, more and more institutes and companies join as members. CGCM has now got a total of 109 member institutes and 7 industrial affiliates, distributed in different parts of the world, viz. Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Macau, Mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the USA. With member institutes from various countries and regions, the Consortium can develop valuable collaborations and academic and cultural exchange among members from all over the world and can expedite the goal of globalization of Chinese Medicine.

Consortium meetings

Eight Consortium meetings have been held since December 2003. It is held annually starting from 2006. The number of participants has kept increasing, from about 30 at the first meeting to more than 220 at the 8th Meeting which was just held in UK in August 2009. The latest progress and valuable insights of TCM were shared among worldwide members and guests which can accelerate the goal of globalization of Chinese Medicine and advancing the field of Chinese medicine to benefit human kind in the near future.
