School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University

The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is the first University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded institution that provides higher education in Chinese medicine in Hong Kong. It launched the first five-year full-time Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Biomedical Science programme (BCM/BScBS) in 1998, which is a milestone of introducing Chinese medical education into the formal higher education system of Hong Kong. In 2001, the School took a step further and introduced the four-year full-time Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honors) in Chinese Medicine programme (BPharm), which is the only one of its kind in Hong Kong.

In addition to the above full-time programmes, SCM offers a wide range of academic and professional programmes for continuing studies in Chinese medicine. Admission to research postgraduate programmes for MPhil and PhD degrees started in 1998, and two full-time taught Master's degree programmes, i.e. Master of Chinese Medicine and Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Chinese Medicine, were introduced in 2009. Moreover, the School initiated innovative online TCM forums in 2003 and subsequently developed online TCM courses in 2007. With the unwavering efforts of all staff during the past years, the School has built a comprehensive educational structure which fits the special needs and characteristics of the local society, and has become the leading institution in Chinese medicine education in Hong Kong.

Emphasizing both teaching and research, the School has built state-of-the-art laboratories and installed advanced equipment to facilitate high quality research. Our research teams have published papers in leading journals in Mainland China as well as overseas. The School is also a leader in medicinal herbs authentication and quality assessment, cancer and inflammation research, and utilization of proteomics and metabolomics technologies for Chinese medicine research. These achievements enabled the School to score full marks in the 2006 Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the UGC. Equipped with quality teaching and modern facilities, the School offers an ideal environment for teaching and research of Chinese medicine.

In terms of clinical services, SCM runs 11 Chinese medicine clinics in different districts of Hong Kong, which serve as a practicum base for students on the one hand, and deliver quality healthcare services to the public on the other.

The School's vision is to contribute the best efforts to foster the modernization, professionalization and internationalization of Chinese medicine.
