An inaugural lecture kicks off the territory's first Consul-General-in-Residence Programme

An inaugural lecture delivered today (April 1) by Mr. Serge Mostura, Consul-General of France, about the Sino-French relations on the cultural side kicked off the University's Consul-General-in-Residence Programme, which is the first of its kind among Hong Kong's tertiary institutions.

Officiating at the inaugural lecture were Professor Ng Ching-fai, President & Vice-Chancellor; Professor Fan Yiu-kwan, Vice-President (Development); and Dr. Ting Wai, Acting Head of Government & International Studies Department.

In delivering the opening remarks, Professor Fan says the programme emphasises international cooperation and inter-cultural understanding and is aimed at enhancing knowledge of and interest in world affairs among the university community as well as the general public.

Under the scheme, Consuls-General of diplomatic missions in Hong Kong will be invited to "take up residence" for a year during which time they or their staff will act as resource persons about their countries and will help to facilitate exchange between Hong Kong and their home countries.

First in the Consul-General-in-Residence Programme are Mr. Serge Mostura, Consul-General of France, Mr. Tharit Charungvat, Consul-General of Thailand, and Mr. James R. Keith, Consul-General of the United States.

The lecture attracted both the University community and the general public, including a dozen of secondary students. Among the guests were the Consul-Generals of Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Nepal, South Africa, and Turkey, as well as representatives from the Consulates General of Italy, United States, Venezuela, and Germany.
