Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has allied with Peking University (PKU), Beijing Normal University (BNU) and National University of Singapore (NUS) to form Asia's premier league in physics research to boost the region's competitiveness in the global arena.
The "Big Four" signed an agreement today (August 20) to form the "Beijing-Hong Kong-Singapore Joint Centre for Nonlinear and Complex Systems" for collaborative research and the nurturing of post-graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
Representing the universities to sign the agreement were Professor Lin Jiuxiang, Vice-President of PKU; Professor Dai Jiagan, Vice-President of BNU; Professor Herbert Tsang, Academic Vice-President of HKBU; and Professor Lai Choy-heng, Vice-Provost of NUS.
The four institutions have been cooperating in research in nonlinear and complex systems since 1996. Their vice-presidents gathered for the first time in Hong Kong to open a new chapter in the history of nonlinear and complex systems research, which is set to have a far-reaching impact on Asia's academic advancement.
The agreement signing was witnessed by Professor Ouyang Qi of the School of Physics of PKU; Professor Hu Gang of the Department of Physics of BNU; Professor Bambi Hu, Head of the Department of Physics of HKBU; and Professor Tan Eng-chye, Dean of the Faculty of Science of NUS.
HKBU Council members, teaching and administrative staff members as well as
students joined colleagues from sister universities in Hong Kong to witness
the birth of the academic league of "Asian dragons".
