launches new book "Hong Kong Commonly Confused Chinese Medicines"

The Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held a ceremony today (21 January)
to launch a new book "Hong Kong Commonly Confused Chinese Medicines", compiled
by Dr. Zhao Zhongzhen, a Chinese materia medica expert at its School
of Chinese Medicine (SCM).
Containing information and pictures of 86 sets of commonly confused Chinese
medicines in Hong Kong, the publication serves as a manual or guidebook for
practitioners and consumers alike. It is suitable for clinical, research and
teaching use as well as for use by the Chinese medicinal herbs production and
trade sectors.
Currently, confusing systems of naming co-exist in the local market, under which
several different strains of herbs may have the same product name while the
same strain of herb may have many different common names.
By setting out a unified and clear naming system for the commonly confused Chinese
medicinal herbs in Hong Kong, the book will help rectify this unsatisfactory
state of affairs.
The book project was financed by a grant to the Chinese Medicine Merchants Association
from the SME Development Fund administered by the Hong Kong Trade and Industry
Department. Four thousands copies of the new book will be distributed free of
charge to traders, wholesalers and retailers of Chinese medicinal herbs, the
Consumer Council, the Hong Kong Tourism Board and other related trade associations
and public organisations. The public may access the website: www.hkcccm.com

The 86 sets of commonly confused Chinese medicines covered by the book are now
on display at the Chinese Medicines Centre of HKBU for three months. There will
also be a series of public lectures on this subject, the first one of which
will be held on 19 February 2005 (Saturday) at 2:30 pm at the Dr. and Mrs. Hung
Hin-shiu Lecture Theatre, School of Chinese Medicine of HKBU.
由香港浸會大學中醫藥學院編著、香港中藥聯商會督印的《香港容易混淆中藥》，經過一年多
時間的市場調查、資料搜集、認真研究，透過學者和行內專家從學術角度及業界的實際情況反
覆推敲討論的成果，終於完成面世，並於今天(一月二十一日)舉行新書發佈會。
《香港容易混淆中藥》由浸大中醫藥學院中藥學專家趙中振博士負責編著，是正本清源之作，
為業內人士及消費者提供正規、清晰、簡易和普遍接受的中藥命名系統，以糾正中藥業存在的
一些同物異名或同名異物的情況。
該書圖文並茂，深入淺出，羅列了八十六組本港容易混淆的中藥，如白附子與白附片、木通與
關木通、合歡花與夜合花、白前與白薇、板藍根與南板藍根等，不但適合中醫葯臨床、科研、
教學、生產、營銷工作者使用，也是中醫藥國際貿易和行政管理的有益參考書。
該書獲香港工業貿易署中小企業發展基金支持出版，四千冊將免費派發予所有中藥材貿易、批
發及零售商、消費者委員會、旅遊發展局及其他有關的商會及機構；並上載於網頁www.hkcccm.com
供公眾瀏覽及下載。此外，書中八十六組中藥現於浸大中藥標本中心展出三個月，而首個免費
公開學術講座將於二月十九日(星期六)下午二時三十分在浸大中醫藥學院孔憲紹伉儷講堂舉行。
