Master's degree Music student Donald Yu, who composed his first work when he was 17, is donating the music scores of several his masterpieces to the University library. He said he is proud and honoured to donate the scores in order to share his compositions and happiness with the HKBU community. The scores are among 35 of Donald's works published by Gold Branch Music, Inc. in the U.S. Falling in love with classical music at an early age, Donald won a scholarship in 2000 to study music at Baylor University in the U.S. Having returned to Hong Kong after graduation, he is studying composition at HKBU with Dr. Christopher Keyes and conducting with Mr. Andrew Cheung. Donald now has composed more than 80 works, including piano pieces, chamber music, choral music and orchestral works. He describes his works as easy to understand and to perform. Among the scores contributed to the library are Autumn Elegy for Violin and Piano and William Shakespeare's Sonnet 104 for Mezzo-soprano and Piano. Donald, whose works have been performed in the U.S., Hong Kong and Europe, last year received an award from the American Authors, Composers and Publishers Society Limited. His first record, "Illusions: Music of Man-Ching 'Donald' Yu", a collection of 11 piano pieces, will be released in the U.S. in early March, and a copy will also be donated to the library. "Music is my life. I shall devote myself to composition and music education," said Donald. |
