of Cinema and Television
Background
The Department
of Cinema & Television is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. Since
the early 1970s, it has been providing Hong Kong with competent graduates
to work in the entertainment and creative industry.
Each year CTV admits
about 60 students, 20-25 students will join the Master of Fine Arts Program,
whilst the rest recruited to the Bachelor program. The Department is well
equipped,
with 3 Multi-media HD screening theaters, 2 TV studios, 1 digital and
1 traditional photography laboratory. Audio facilities include 3 sound-recording
studios and 2 sound booths. Editing facilities include 1 HD editing lab
and 3 digital video editing labs. Other equipment includes 12 sets of
16mm film camera and 68 sets of video cameras, ranging from DV camera,
Beta camera to HD camera. We have 5 sets of Steenbecks for 16mm film editing,
1 set of Steenbeck for 35mm film editing, 54 sets of digital video editing
equipment, of which includes Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro and HD Avid editing
systems. We have 1 digital Animation laboratory with 25 sets of Maya and
1 Quantel special effect workstation. The Department is also served by
fully qualified teaching, administrative and technical staff, and by a
library with extensive holdings of 1,000,000 volumes of books, 108,000
audiovisual items, 4,100 serial subscriptions, and 180 different data
bases.
Undergraduate
Studies
Program
and characteristics:
A variety of theoretical
and applied subjects make up the professional curriculum in the Cinema
and Television Option. Students are provided with a variety of creative
training, from basic to advanced, in both the conceptual and practical
dimensions of film, video, screenplay and animation. Intensive subject-work
study is also available in a number of areas, including directing, producing,
and writing as well as in the craft and technical skills of editing, photography
post-production, and sound recording and mixing. Classes in cinema studies
also provide students with a critical and historical perspective from
which to analyze their artistic endeavors.

Note: Students must take 21 units of Distribution Requirements, i.e.,
6 units outside Communication, of which one subject must be Science
subject; 6 units outside the major/Option and 9 units of free electives
from any programmed.
Admission
Applicants for the
Communication Course must satisfy general University requirements and
also the School requirements. These are the minimal requirements and
do not guarantee acceptance to the Course:
A. Grade D in one
AL subject; and
B. Grade D in AS Use of English; and
C. Grade D in AS Chinese Language and Culture; and
D. Grade D in any 2 AS subjects (or a second AL), or Grade E if one
of the preceding subjects is Grade C (or above).
Selected
applicants may be interviewed in order to elicit further relevant information
such as motivation, interests, previous experience, communication skills,maturity,
and potential adaptabilityto a career in communication. Special emphasis
is placed on creative potential and language skills. Each applicant
is encouraged to present a portfolio of his or her creative working
the interview. Students who have taken the Art subject in the Hong Kong
Certificate of Education Examination or who have good sense of creativity
are preferred.
Candidates seeking
admissions under the University regulations, for applicants who have
not taken Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examinations or who are
not native speakers of Chinese will be considered on an individual basis.
