The 8th departmental seminar will be held on Feb. 2, 2010 at Room WLB 601 from 2:30 - 3:30pm.
Ms. Yuanyan ZHANG from University of California, Los Angeles, will present the topic
"Foreign Currency Inflow and Real Exchange Rate Movement".
The 7th departmental seminar has been held on Jan. 29 at Room WLB 601 from 4:30 - 5:30pm.
Ms. Shi Ki WAN from University of Southern California presented the topic
"A Panel Data Approach for Program Evaluation - Measuring the Benefits of Political and Economic Integration of Hong Kong with Mainland China".
The 6th departmental seminar has been held on Jan. 22, 2010 at Room DLB 702 from 4:30 - 5:30 pm.
Ms. Ling FENG from University of California, Davis, presented the topic
"Taste Shocks, Endogenous Labor Supply and Equity Home Bias".
A panel consisting of academics from overseas and Hong Kong was formed to consider
the programme, Master of Science in Applied Economics.
The panel has visited the department on Jan. 13 and 14, 2010.

Professor Kit-Chun Joanna Lam has been appointed by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development
of the HKSAR Government to serve as a member of the Review Body on Bid Challenges from Jan 2010.

The 5th departmental seminar has been held on Dec. 17, 2009 at Room WLB 705B from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.
Prof. Les Oxley from University of Canterbury, New Zealand, presented the topic
"Financial Markets: Long Memory or Shifting Means?".

The 4th departmental seminar has been beld on Dec. 16, 2009 at Room WLB 705B from 3:30 to 4:30 pm.
Prof. Michael Funke from Hamburg Univerity, Germany, presented the topic
"A Soft Edge Target Zone Model: Theory and Application to Hong Kong".
The 3rd departmental seminar has been held on Dec. 8, 2009 at Room WLB 705B from 10:00am to 12:00pm.
There were two speakers: Dr. Elissaios Papyrakis from University of East Anglia, UK,
and Dr. Shuangzhe Liu from University of Canberra, New Zealand.

Prof. Wei Longbao of Zhejiang University will visit the department and give
a talk to our students on 9 November 2009.

A sharing session "Steps to Success" was held on Sept. 25, 2009. This function is organized
by the Department of Economics, the Alumni Relations Office, the Economics Society,
and the Economics Alumni Association. Four outstanding alumni of the Department of Economics
shared with their experience of striving for successes starting from the training of economics.
Each of the speakers has extensive knowledge and practical experience in investment banking or
in projects cooperating with governments around the world.

Professor Udo Broll, Chair of International Economics,
Faculty of Business Management and Economics, Dresden University of Technology, Germany,
has visited the Department of Economics during September 28 to October 9, 2009.
Professor Broll's research interests are in the fields of International Trade,
Open Macroeconomics, and Risk Management.
Mr. Jim Wing Him, a student in the BBA Applied Economics option,
won the scholastic award of the university for 2008-2009.
Department of Economics, HKBU successfully hosted and co-organized
the eighth annual conference of
"Korea and the World Economy" on July 9-10, 2009. The conference, which was jointly organized by the Department, the Association of Korean Economic Studies (AKES), Korea Development Institute (KDI), Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), and the Research Center for International Economics (RCIE) at the University of Washington, was held on the campus.
Nearly 100 participants, including academics, policy makers, and practitioners, came from many countries and places in the world, including Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, France, Singapore, Malaysia, the US, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, and India. More than 50 papers were presented, covering a wide range of fields in economics and finance. These papers address many specific issues such as the Korean and other economies, foreign trade, the new multilateral round of the WTO and economic integration, trade liberalization and regionalism in East Asia, foreign investment, etc.
In the conference, Professor Kar-yiu Wong, Head of the Department and one of the co-organizers of the conference, delivered remarks as the host about the conference series; Professor Allan Chan, Associate Dean of the School of Business, welcomed the participants on behalf of the university and the school; and Mr. Tong-Youn Seok, Consul General of the Korean Consulate General in HK, delivered congratulatory remarks. In the conference, Professor Henry Wan, Jr. of Cornell University and Dr. Jong Wha Lee, Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank, gave keynote speeches.
The colleagues of the Department participated actively in the conference. Professor Wing-Keung Wong, Drs. Sung-Ko Li, Yun-Kwong Kwok, Pak-Hung Mo, and Chunwei Lai, and a number of graduate and undergraduate students worked hard as local organizers. Nearly all of these colleagues and Professor Kit-Chun Lam presented papers in the conference, and interacted cordially and closely with many other participants.
The Department organized two sessions in
"Conference on China Studies: Past, Present and Future", held
on May 23, 2009. This conference was organized by China Studies Programme, HKBU.
