Creating a Folder and an Index Page

You will soon create a large number of files of various formats.

It is important, therefore, to build up a proper file structure on your computer.
You should also give names to the files, which will later allow you to find and identify them with ease.

Create your top folder first.

For the purpose of this seminar, you should do so on the desktop.

Place your cursor somewhere on the desktop.

Right-click your mouse.

Under "New" >> click "Folder".

A folder icon will appear on the desktop.

Give a name to your folder, e.g. "deutsch1", "zheda1" or "france".

Now you should create your topmost entry page (from which students will later access all exercises).

Use either FRONTPAGE or WORD.

Open the program and click on "File", then "New".

Create a blank page/document.

Write a title on the top of the page/document, e.g. "Online Exercises"/"Online-Übungen".

  • Save the page under the name "index".
  • Save it in the desktop folder you just created (see above).
  • Save it as a "Web Page" (i.e. an HTML document) with the extension *.htm (rather than a WORD document with the extension *.doc).

The saved file will have the following name and path:

zheda1/index.htm

"index.htm" is now the name of the "entrance door" to your system "zheda1". All exercises will be linked to this page.

The whole string "zheda/index.htm" is called path. Your operating system (Windows) needs a full and correct path to call up pages and exercises.

Your page (if created with WORD) should look like this:
