Working with Quia | |
|
The following are examples of Quia exercises created with a 'regular' subscription account. They should give you just an idea of how Quia works. To create your own exercises, you need a personally registered Quia trial account (see previous step).
|
||
| Suppose
"The Life of Vincent van Gogh" is a text you have introduced and
discussed in class. Now you want to create some exercises which allow
students to revise the new vocabulary later on.
Once you have logged in with your password, you will see your personal instructor screen, which lists all exercises you have created within the Quia system:
Click on "Create a New Activity" and select an exercise type. Here it is "matching, flashcard, concentration and word search" - four exercise types created at once. The Quia "Activity Editor" then asks you to enter a title and a list of terms (i.e. the vocabulary and its synonyms, parapharases or translations. In "Description" you can insert instructions to your students.
Enter all the words/word pairs. Quia then lets you specify what the vocabulary cards should look like. Then press "Done". The remote Quia system saves your exercise and immediately gives you a WWW address (here: http://www.quia.com/jg/377969.html) . This is the path under which your students can later access the exercise:
Enter "Vincent Van Gogh" in your Lesson page (lesson1.htm). Highlight the name and insert a hyperlink. This hyperlink should be the URL you received from Quia (your students won't see it). |
||
| If you
click on the URL, your exercise set appears. You (or your students) can
immediately play with it.
If you detect a mistake or otherwise would like to change it, you can do so easily from your personal instructor page (which now lists the new exercise as well). |
||
| You have
created a matching exercise:
You have created an electronic stack of vocabulary cards, which is reshuffled each time a student uses it:
Lastly, you have created a memory exercise:
Depending on the amount of vocabulary, the entire process takes just a few minutes. |
||
| The
other Quia activities can be generated in a similar manner (although some
of them can be quite tricky - for both instructor/author and students).
