Departmental Success in the RAE

The Department of Government and International Studies (GIS) achieved remarkable results in the 2020 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), which was released on May 24, 2021. Our department, assessed in the panel of political science and public administration, has 16% of research output that are ranked by the panel experts as “world leading”, which is above the university average, and 36% that are ranked as “internationally excellent”. Our overall social impact is also regarded by the panel as “internationally excellent”. The results are a significant improvement from the 2014 exercise, when 2% and 18% of our research output were graded as “world leading” and “internationally excellent” respectively.

“The result reflects the collective dedication of colleagues, past and present, and bides well for a promising future, not least because GIS has been strengthened by the arrival of several new colleagues”, said Prof. Alistair Cole, department head of GIS.
