MAK, K.S. Ricardo Our department, which offers three programs of study for undergraduates and advanced training for graduates pursuing higher degrees by research or by coursework, has established a reputation for its expertise in modern Chinese history, Sino-foreign relations, gender history, Christianity in modern China, Hong Kong history, etc. The historical education that we seek to provide aims at strengthening our students' communication skills, analytical and organizing powers, and research ability, so as to prepare them for a great variety of careers such as journalist, librarian, museum researcher, bank manager, community or social worker, lawyer, high school teacher or university professor. Our faculty members, besides being enthusiastic teachers, are all active researchers who have attained a high standard of academic achievement. Striving to facilitate academic exchange between scholars from different parts of the world, we take an active part in organizing international collaborations. For instance, the Modern History Research Centre, which is housed in our department since its founding in January 2002, has grown into a meeting place for Chinese and Western historians specializing in modern Chinese history. It is my great pleasure to be the head of our department, which is well known for its strong team spirit. With the support of my colleagues, I shall do whatever I can in the years to come to perfectionize the learning and research environments of our department. |
