Since 1988, the Institute has organised local and international conferences on various business and economic topics with participants from all over the world.

The 2nd World Business Ethics Forum: Rethinking the Value of Business Ethics (11-12 December 2008) 第二屆世界商業倫理論壇 - 主題: 商業倫理價值的再思

The Second World Business Ethics Forum with the theme of "Rethinking the Value of Business Ethics" was successfully held on 11 and 12 December 2008 at Hong Kong Baptist University. It was a timely event as the world faces an unprecedented global financial crisis, calling into question the ethics of some of the core values in business and finance.

A total of 185 academics and practitioners representing 21 different parts of the world including Australia, Canada, China, German, India, Korea, New Zealand, Switzerland, UK and USA attended the conference. It has indeed been an occasion for academics and practitioners to meet colleagues from around the world, share ideas and discuss issues and research findings related in business ethics. The ethical issues discussed were diverse and extensive, including those related to corporate governance, marketing, accounting and finance, information system etc. Local participants from different tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and Macau mingled with international counterparts.

Over the years, the School of Business has gained prominence in the areas of corporate governance and business ethics in the region. One of our more recent achievements has been our inclusion in the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), an international academic network within the United Nations Global Compact. In adopting these principles, we are committed to creating educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable active learning experiences for responsible leadership. In line with the objectives of PRME, the 2nd World Business Ethics Forum provided an excellent opportunity for academics and practitioners to meet colleagues from around the world, to share and to discuss ideas and issues related to new thinkings and research findings in business ethics. A total of 54 papers were presented in 20 concurrent sessions on 11 and 12 December 2008.

On 11 December 2008, Professor CHENG Siwei (成思危教授), Former Vice-Chairman, Standing Committee of the National People's' Congress, People's Republic of China, was invited to deliver a speech entitled “Three Levels of Business Ethics”.

The ceremony was followed by the keynote speech of Mr. Wilfred WONG Ying-wai, SBS, JP
(王英偉先生), Council and Court Chairman of HKBU on "Re-building Business Ethics". A panel session focused on "The Practical Value of Business Ethics" was also held in the morning with the panelists including Mr. HU Shao-ming Herman, JP (胡曉明先生), Chairman of Ryoden Development Limited; Ms. Winnie NG (伍穎梅小姐), Director of the Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre and Ir. Peter K. K. WONG, SBS, JP (王國強先生), Group Chairman and CEO of Kum Shing Group. The panel moderator was Prof. Simon S. M. HO (何順文教授), Dean of School of Business of HKBU.

Prof. Alex MICHALOS, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Business Ethics, delivered his speech on “The Monster of Supercapitalism” in the afternoon on Day 1. In the evening, Dr. Anthony NEOH, QC, SC, JP (梁定邦博士), Former Chairman of Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, gave a speech on "Can A Corporation Be Ethical?" at the conference banquet at Kowloon Shang-ri La Hotel.

Highlights of the programme on Day 2, 12 December, included a speech on "Putting Business Ethics into Practice — The Hong Kong Experience" by the distinguished speaker, Mr. Raymond NG (伍國明先生), Executive Director of the Hong Kong Ethics Development Centre of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), HKSAR.

The 1st World Business Ethics Forum: Does East Meet West? (1-3 November 2006) 第一屆世界商業倫理論壇

To explore developments and trends in business ethics, the Business School of Hong Kong Baptist University co-hosted with the University of Macau the World Business Ethics Forum from 1 - 3 November 2006. The theme of the Forum was "Does East Meet West?" and IED was the Conference Secretariat. The Forum was held in Hong Kong and Macau and featured keynote speakers, addressed by distinguished experts, two panel sessions and 76 paper presentations. More than 250 academics, practitioners and postgraduate students from 20 countries and regions around the globe attended the Forum. The Inaugural Asia-Pacific Corporate Governance Conference (25-26 August 2005) 首屆亞太公司管治國際會議

The Inaugural Asia-Pacific Corporate Governance Conference was held at the Island Shangri-La Hotel, Hong Kong, on 25 and 26 August 2005. The Conference aims to provide a forum to enhance collaboration and interaction among researchers, corporate executives, institutional investors, market intermediaries and government regulators on major corporate governance issues. It has attracted some 200 participants, including about 80 experts and scholars from more than 20 countries, dignitaries and practitioners from the local financial sectors, as well as business students. The Conference was opened by the Hon. Frederick Ma, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, HKSAR Government; Mr. Moses Cheng, HKBU Council Chairman and Chairman of Listing Committee of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited; Prof. Herbert Tsang, Acting President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU; and Prof. Simon Ho, Dean of School of Business of HKBU. Apart from presentations of papers by scholars, other major sessions included keynote and featured speeches by Professor Li Wei-an of Nanking University; and Prof. Christine Mallin, Editor of Corporate Governance: An International Review; as well as two plenary sessions.

Conference on Chinese Case Research: Methodology and Prospects
「中國企業管理案例研究:方法與前景」
專題研討會 (二零零三年十二月二十日至二十一日)

由國家自然科學基金委員會管理科學部、香港浸會大學工商管理學院及大連理工大學管理學院聯合主辦之「中國企業管理案例研究:方法與前景」 專題研討會於二零零三年十二月二十日至二十一日在大連理工大學舉行,超過六十位參加者出席是次活動。大會從美國邀請了三位主講嘉賓: Prof. Anne Tsui (Arizona State University), Prof. Chao C. Chen (The State University of New Jersey) Prof. Aimin Yan (Boston University)與出席人士分享心得及交流經驗。香港浸會大學工商管理學院副院長暨市場學系系主任陳潔光教授、市場學系副教授蕭偉森博士在會上聯合主持一個案例研究工作坊。

Hong Kong Economic Association Second Biennial Conference "Theme: A New World Economic Order" (15-16 December 2002) 香港經濟協會雙年學術會議

International Conference on Business Ethics in the Knowledge Economy
(2-4 April 2002)

New theoretical developments and trends in business ethics were discussed at the International Conference on Business Ethics in the Knowledge Economy held at the University during 2-4 April 2002.  Organised by the School of Business, the Conference consisted of keynote seminars by renowned experts in business ethics and a public forum for the business community, with more than 40 academics worldwide presenting papers on these issues. It was attended by over 60 participants from more than 15 countries including America, Australia, Britain, Canada, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, the Mainland and Hong Kong.

A public forum focusing on practical issues relating to business ethics in Hong Kong was held on 3 April 2002 with an attendance of over 70 participants. Mrs. Pamela Chan Wong Shui, J. P., (陳黃穗太平紳士), Chief Executive of the Consumer Council; Ms. Anna Wu Hung Yuk, J.P., (胡紅玉太平紳士), Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission; and Mr. Stephen Selby, J.P., Director of the Intellectual Property Department of HKSAR Government, were invited to share their views and experience, while Dr. Allen Lee Peng Fei, J.P. (李鵬飛博士,太平紳士) served as the moderator. The School of Business academics have been actively engaged in research on ethical issues.

The Focused Research Area (FRA) on Business and Economics Ethics has been established since 1998 to cater for faculty interested in this area. Members come from different disciplines and are engaged in a variety of interdisciplinary research projects relating to the empirical and normative dimensions of business and economic ethics. The Co-ordinator of the FRA on Business and Economics Ethics is Dr. Joanna K.C. Lam, who is also Chairperson of the Conference. Mr. Wilfred Wong, Deputy Chairman of HKBU Council and Vice-Chairman of Shui On Holdings Ltd. and Prof. Fan Yiu-Kwan, Dean of HKBU School of Business, officiated at the opening ceremony.

Asia-Pacific Researchers in Organization Studies (APROS) "Theme: Organization Theory in Transition:Transitional Societies; Transitional Theories" (3-6 December 2001)

The Asia-Pacific Researchers in Organisation Studies (APROS) 2001 Conference was jointly organised by the Department of Management, School of Business and the Wing Lung Bank International Institute for Business Development of Hong Kong Baptist University (IIBD). This was the 9th meeting of APROS since its inception in 1982, and it was held from December 3rd to 6th in the Lam Woo International Conference Center. More than 60 participants from 17 countries attended this conference and over 50 papers were presented. Professor Richard Whitley from University of Manchester, Professor David Knights from University of Keele, Professor Udo Glittenberg, Director of Egana Goldpfeil (Holdings) Ltd., and Professor Stewart Clegg from University of Technology, Sydney were the conference keynote speakers.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Organisation Theory in Transition: Transitional Societies; Transitional Theories”. It covered a broad range of sub-themes, such as: Management Theory in Transition; Joint Venture, Collaboration and Working Culture; Managing Differences and Diversity; International Management in Transitional Societies; Managing and Developing Human Resources; Institutionalism, Neo-Institutionalism Theory; Investments in Transitional Societies; New Perspectives in Managing and Learning; Organising in the Information Age; Gender, Culture and Organisation; and Business Strategies in Transition.

The Conference provided an excellent forum for researchers to exchange ideas, and to discuss issues in detail. Also, it enriched the researchers’ understanding of theories and concepts of organisation studies, and their impact on the strategic development in the New economy. The Fifth International Conference on ISO 9000 and TQM: "Action 2000: Imperatives for Improvement" (25-27 April 2000)

The 5th International Conference on ISO 9000 and TQM was jointly hosted by the IED and the Productivity & Quality Research Centre of NUS, Singapore in Singapore. The objectives of the conference are to provide a forum for the identification of contemporary development in the theories and practices of TQM and for the sharing of experience; and to establish the impact of ISO 9000 Implementation on TQM.

The Conference gave opportunities to executives in Singapore to benefit at first hand from the expertise and experience of eminent speakers who were senior executives of many leading edge organisations and distinguished academics contributing to the research and development of ISO 9000 and TQM. The 5th ICIT was attended by over 200 delegates from 20 countries, including some 110 presenters. UK took the lead in the number of papers presented. This figure was followed by the Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, USA and Japan. NUS had contributed 14 papers and 18 delegates were from Hong Kong.

The HKBU was represented by Prof. Y.K. Fan, Dr. Ray Carroll, Dr. Sam Ho, and Dr. Jane Moy who also achieved the best paper award for the subtheme on “Leadership and Organisational Development”. A 610-page proceedings was published as a book “ISO 9000 and TQM for 2000+”. The 1999 AFBE Conference on Multiple Management Styles: Approaches to Management in the 21st Century (15-17 November 1999)

The 1999 Asian Forum on Business Education (AFBE) Conference on "Multiple Management Styles: Approaches to Management in the 21st Century" was jointly organised by School of Business, Wing Lung Bank International Institute for Business Development (IIBD) and Asian Forum on Business Education (AFBE). It was held from November 15 to 17 at Hong Kong Baptist University and 35 papers were presented at the Conference by participants from 11 countries.

The Third and Fourth International Conference on ISO9000 & TQM
(14-16 April 1998 and 7-9 April 1999)
Conference Chair: Dr. Sam Ho, Department of Finance & Decision Sciences, School of Business

The Third ICIT and Fourth ICIT conferences were both attended by over 200 delegates over the world. The conferences were forums for the identification of the contemporary development in the theories and practices of TQM, and for the sharing of experience. The impact of ISO 9000 implementation on TQM was also identified. Participants were able to benefit from senior executives of many leading-edge organisations and distinguished academics who contributed to the research and development of ISO 9000 and TQM.

In the Third ICIT conference, over 100 papers were presented, with 60% of the papers came from 20 overseas countries and the rest from Hong Kong. 20 speakers have given keynote speeches in the conference and a 650-page conference proceeding was published. Whilst in the Fourth ICIT conference, over 130 papers were presented and 25 speakers have given speeches. The conference proceeding was published as a 1000-page book "TQM & Innovation". Mr. Andrew Leung, Director of the HKSARG Social Welfare Department, was the Panel Chair of the Concluding Debate Session for both conferences.

International Conference on Multimedia Technology & Management; and International
Conference on Multimedia & Telecommunications Management (11-14 December 1996 and 17-19 December 1998)
Conference Chair: Dr. Vincent W. S. Chow, Department of Finance & Decision Sciences, School of Business

These conferences provided forums for discussion and exchange of ideas on the current issues of multimedia technology and applications and the use of telecommunications in managing multimedia. Participants included academicians and practitioners in public and private sectors. In the 1996 conference, over 60 scholarly papers were presented and discussed by participants from 20 countries, including China.

The keynote speaker, Dr. William Lo, Managing Director of Hong Kong Telecom IMS Ltd. delivered a speech on "Interactive Multimedia Development in Hong Kong". Twenty-four concurrent sessions were scheduled, covering topics on Systems Development, Multimedia Education, Synchronization & Image Synthesis, Telecommunication and Technology, Hypertext/Hypermedia, Distributed Multimedia, Business Application and Multimedia Training, among others.

For the 1998 conference, thirty-one concurrent sessions were scheduled, covering topics on Multimedia Education, Authoring Multimedia Systems, Web-based Information Systems, Multimedia Distributed Systems, Business Application, Multimedia Communications Systems, and Multimedia Information Management. The keynote speakers were Mr. Hermann Ruegg of HK Tourist Association and Mr. Masa Inakage of Japan Nihon University.

International Conference on Exchange Rate Stability and Currency Board Economics (28-29 November 1998)

To provide a forum for rigorous analysis by scholars and experts from around the world on the general themes of exchange rate stability and currency board economics, the Department of Economics organised an International Conference on Exchange Rate Stability and Currency Board Economics on 28-29 November 1998.
The conference was attended by participants from the HKMA, the World Bank, the IMF, the US Fed, the Bundesbank, as well as researchers and officials from other central banks, universities, institutions and commercial entities. Over thirty keynote speeches and papers were presented. Quite a few of them analyzed the theory of currency board economics and the specific currency board arrangements in Hong Kong, Argentina, Estonia, Lithuania and Eastern Europe.
