HKBU students win CFA Global Investment Research Challenge Championship

Four students from the School of Business scooped the global championship over four competing teams from USA and Europe, in the Global Investment Research Challenge held in New York, USA on 1 May. The HKBU winners were invited to preside over the closing bell of the NASDAQ trading day on 2 May.

More than 300 students from 80 universities worldwide participated in the competition, which was introduced by CFA Institute. The event was spread over more than seven months with several rounds of local and regional competitions. The HKBU team was: Sophia Zhang (Accountancy and Law, Year 3); Andy Chau (Finance and Decision Sciences, Year 3); Amy Lee (Finance and Decision Sciences, Year 3); and Angela Yuen (Marketing, Year 3). In pursuing the global championship, the team had first swept championships in the Greater China region, and then in the Asia Pacific region.

Commending the students’ outstanding achievement, Professor Ng Ching-fai, President and Vice-Chancellor said, “Upholding the whole person education, HKBU always encourages its students to enrich their experiences by participating in international competitions. Our students’ excellent performance is not only a victory for HKBU and strong testament to our University’s contribution in nurturing financial talents, but it is also a victory for Hong Kong and its status as an international financial centre.”

Professor Simon Ho, Dean of School of Business, said, “Over the past several months, the participating team has put into practice the knowledge acquired at HKBU. They drew their investment conclusions through dedicated fundamental research and data analysis, which reflects that successful investment is not about luck but lots of hard work. HKBU students’ success proves that their investment analysis has reached international standard.”

HKBU team extends their gratitude to their advisors from the School of Business, in particular Dr. Alexander Fung, Assistant Professor of Finance and Decision Sciences. Andy Chau, President of the HKBU’s Student Investment Club said, “Our sincere gratitude goes to HKBU for setting up the Investment Club which gives us invaluable hands-on experience in investment. With academic knowledge as our backup, we can flexibly put into practice what we have learnt.”

During the competition, participating teams were required to analyse the buy (sell) rating of an assigned public traded company. HKBU team analysed the future development of China Mobile Limited (CML), specifically exploring the possible impact on CML posed by the restructuring of China’s telecommunication industry.

The Global Investment Research Challenge was introduced in 2007 by CFA Institute. It aims to promote best practices in research among the next generation of analysts. Defeating teams from six local universities and three Mainland universities in November last year, the HKBU team won the championship in Greater China. It then scooped the Asia Pacific championship, which was held last month. Representing the Asia Pacific region, the veteran HKBU team then shined brightest in the international arena winning the global championship.
