| Abstract |
news.gov.hk is the source of online news, features and commentary from the Hong Kong Government's Information Services Department. It is produced and maintained by a team of seasoned editors and writers within the department. This site aims to enhance ties between Government and business, industry, academia and the community at large while presenting news and information in a dynamic multimedia format. The news.gov.hk team strives to post stories and background information on breaking news from the Government in a timely fashion and to update stories whenever new information becomes available. We also provide background and related information through feature stories, photo galleries, videos and links.
Designed to look and feel like an online newspaper, we wanted our site to appeal to a wide and diverse audience. Beyond seven traditional news categories - Business & Finance; At School, At work; Health & Community; Environment; Law & Order; Infrastructure & Logistics; and Admin & Civic Affairs - we also offer some surprising sections you might not expect to find on a Government website. City Life, for example, helps visitors plan their outings by highlighting all that's going on in Hong Kong on the arts, culture and sports scene. HK for Kids targets kids aged 12 and under, to help them start interacting with the Government early on, especially through two specially designed columns: "If I were the Chief Executive" and "Ask a Senior Government Official". The news media are welcome to adapt news.gov.hk stories, photos and graphics for their own use, provided they credit news.gov.hk. The project is innovative and ambitious by world standards. It is one of only a few Government websites that offer updates throughout the day, seven days a week, coupled with rich multimedia. It was designed from the outset to appeal to three key audiences: the local community, potential visitors and investors, and the media. It now attracts an average of 65,000-plus page views per day - more than 2 million a month - and regularly ranks among the top 10 Hong Kong Government websites. |
