Part
one: who we are
Established in December 1995, www.chinadaily.com.cn
(CDI) became the first national newspaper going online, and has been endorsed
as one of the top five government media websites in China. Now, CDI is an
integration of both online and offline, media and information service provider
in between of China and the world, of the government and worldwide viewers.
Part two: development
There are 4 key stages for CDI's development. First, China Daily web-edition(1995-1997). By providing the online version of the printed paper, people
around the world could read today's newspaper online instead of receiving
the print version a week later.
At the second stage, CDI developed into China Daily On-line(1997-2000).
It started to become a real news website aside from providing China Daily
news stories. Meanwhile, CDI also started online BIS (Business Information
Service) on a subscription fee based model.
During the third stage starting from 2000, CDI re-shaped itself to be a
portal bridging between China and the world. In late 2000, CDI began providing
world news stories in Chinese to domestic readers and media, which won CDI
a lot of attention (hits) domestically.
Now, CDI's moving to be an integration of both online and offline, English
and Chinese, media and information service provider.
Part three: what we do today
CDI's operation is mainly in the following 4 aspects:
(1) Media: CDI's objective is to become the most authoritative, comprehensive
and timely news website to cover China news in English, and world news in
Chinese. Besides, CDI also serves as a platform among agencies and media
to share and trade news stories, pictures and cartoons.
(2) BIS: CDI has set up a larger BIS platform under a new brand BizChina.
CDI aims to offer one-stop shopping to the foreign companies who want to
acquire China's everyday business happenings, in-depth reports of macro-
and micro-economics or any specific industry, statistics and consulting
services.
(3) General information service and government projects: To better serve
the readers, CDI provides travel and living information for foreigners on
its sub-site Metro Life. CDI is also an undertaker of several government
online projects as Chinagate, initiated by Ministry of Finance and the State
Council Information Office and the World Bank, Culturalink, initiated by
Ministry of Culture, and PLA Daily English version.
(4) Education: Besides the three educational channels, Language Tips, Dragon
Kids and Study in China, CDI plans to heading into the field by launching
an English newspaper for primary school students in China.
Part four: Financing / Business
CDI is an independent company invested by China Daily Newspaper Group, different
from other government and national media websites. CDI has been enjoying
government funding for being one of the top five media websites, and make
money from winning government projects.
As an independent company, CDI is much more market oriented. When acting
as a news website, CDI also acts as a wire-service agency for newspapers,
websites both home and abroad. BIS is a source of income while education,
the English paper for kids, will be CDI next major business.
