| Synopsis |
The controversy surrounding the now famous, or indeed
infamous, Article 23 of the Basic Law in Hong Kong is gathering heat.
Unmoved by increasing opposition, the Government has set July 9, 2003
as the deadline for the 2nd and 3rd readings of the National Security
Bill, which will mean legislation of the Article. Not only are opponents
concerned about human rights and freedoms in Hong Kong; they are also
suspicious about the haste with which the Government appears to be pushing
the Bill through legislation. They remain undaunted, however. A very
large number of people have vowed to take to the streets on July 1 in
a massive march to make their sentiments known. |

| Synopsis |
July 1, 2003 will be remembered as a historic day for Hong Kong, not because it happened to be the 6th Anniversary of the return of the territory's sovereignty from Great Britain to the People's Republic of China, but because on that day half a million people took to the streets in a massive march, voicing, in no uncertain fashion, their opposition to the controversial Article 23 of the Basic Law and their demand for democracy. How unhappy are the people in general with their Government? Is their Government listening to them? |
