The department's computer laboratory has 30 Mac Pro, modified to provide the extra capacity needed for large graphics and Chinese typography. One of them is connected to an Epson projector to provide a whole-room view of what is on its screen. The computers are connected to a central university server, and through this to the associated equipment: three laser printers and one scanner.
Software available includes Microsoft Office, and Adobe CS3 Master Suite for producing everything from page layouts to multimedia contents.
The Computer Laboratory is surrounded by the offices of the two student newspapers, which contain five more computers for editing work, as well as cuttings and reference libraries, etc.
The laboratory is available for individual use at any time when it is open (normally from 9 am to 5:30 pm) and not in use for timetabled classes, which generally occupy about 12 hours a week. Users pursuing personal projects are expected to give way to students working on the department's newspapers if the room is full.
