Seminar topic: Sexual Representations in Hong Kong Wuxia Genre:
Visual Transformation, Imaginary and Feminism

Abstract

I intend to explore the Hong Kong Wuxia genre framed by the Shaw Brothers studios new-styled Wuxia in the mid-60s to the early 70s, concerning the representation of women through the figure of Nüxia and its sexual implication when come to the question of reading: whether the representation of Nüxia, as such, is progressive or not. In this seminar, I in particular look at the conception of Xia and Wuxia based on the popular Chinese literature throughout centuries. Then, I would like to trace the figuration of Nüxia and its origin from Tang Chuanqi and its relations with the cinematic archetypes in Hong Kong cinema.
