Mission

Finding and using information effectively is an essential life-long learning skill. It embraces a mixture of practical and analytical skills that can be applied not only in the academic setting, but also in one's professional and personal life. These skills include evaluating information resources critically, identifying and using subject-specific resources, searching effectively, and documenting information sources appropriately. To describe this grouping of knowledge and skills, the term "information literacy" is accepted practice in higher education.
1
The mission of the instructional effort at Hong Kong Baptist University Library is to ensure that students develop fluency in obtaining, evaluating, and using information in an effective, critical, and socially responsible manner.
In the age of the Internet and information overload, there is increasing concern that students rely too much on quick and easy information (i.e. Google) for their information needs, at the expense of more critical and responsible use of information resources. In view of enhancing the quality of students' research skills, critical analysis, and academic writing, we aim to work with faculty to ensure that students develop the necessary knowledge and skills to intelligently find and examine content in our increasingly complex information world.
1 An information literate person possesses a set of abilities to
'recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information as defined in the Association of College & Research Libraries' (ACRL)
Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education at: http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/informationliteracycompetency.cfm.
