Below, the fabrication of a two-dimensional conductor is illustrated. It consists of a thin (tens of nm) layer of "degenerate" semiconductor, that conducts like a metal (M), sandwiched between two "normal" semiconductors, with relatively low conductivities (of n- and p-type, respectively).
