This section includes resources and links to various sites for helping novice users (newbies). Such as a glossary of Internet terms, the structure of Internet Addressing (URLs), or why you should never send a message in ALL CAPS (i.e., the proper netiquette), and much more.

In the second part, some of the tools and programming languages available for constructing a Web site are introduced. These include the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and the new Java language.


General Help

EFF's (Extended) Guide to the Internet A general guide by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit organisation based in Washington, D.C., which helps users to learn more about the Internet. It was originally published electronically in July of 1993 as the Big Dummy's Guide to the Internet. The current edition is available in several formats and languages.
ILC Glossary of Internet Terms Created by the Internet Literacy Consultants, a nonprofit organisation promoting education about the Internet. This glossary explains many of the popular terms, such as browser, World Wide Web, and much more.
Yahoo's Index on Internet: Beginner's Guides A general guide for first-time users of the Internet. It includes email style guide, general Internet "manners" (i.e., Netiquette), answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), calendar of events, and online seminars, etc.
Global Village Tour of the Internet Another guide for the first-time users, developed by the Internet Literacy Consultants for Global Village Communication.
Cyber Course An online training workshop designed for new users. The ultimate goal behind Cyber Course is to provide a way for newbies to help themselves become "knowbies"!
(If the site is too slow, you should try the non-framed version instead.)
General Web Information
WWW and CERN These pages describe CERN's past and present involvement in the World-Wide Web.
WWW Consortium The World-Wide Web Consortium server (W3C) contains official and technical information about the Web, such as its technology and the latest HTML specifications, etc.
Internet Addressing
Uniform Resource Locators A tutorial which explains the meaning and structure of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL), such as http, ftp, and gopher, etc.
A Beginner's Guide to URLs This is another guide to URLs by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)
WWW Addressing Names and Addresses, URIs, URLs, URNs, URCs. This is the overview of addressing (URL, URI) info at W3C

Tools (for Webpage constructions)

Tools for WWW Providers This page includes a list of sites that provide tools for generating Web pages and maintaining Web sites, such as HTML editors and converters.
HoTMetaL PRO A commercial web editor by SoftQuad. A non-commercial evaluation version (HoTMetaL) is also available for free download.
HyperType Edit A freeware HTML editor for Windows (3.1, 95 and NT).
Word Internet Assistant A free converter by Microsoft that turns Word for Windows documents into HTML format. Internet Assistant also available for other Microsoft products, such as Excel and PowerPoint.
Awesome Icon Index An index for various icon collection sites. For a comprehensive list of tools, you may also try the Awesome Webmaster Tools Index.

Programming Languages for the WWW

HyperText Markup Language (HTML)

Introducing HTML 3.2 HTML 3.2 is a W3C Proposed Recommendation for HTML, developed together with vendors including IBM, Microsoft, Netscape Communications Corporation, Novell, SoftQuad, Spyglass, and Sun Microsystems.
HTML 3.2 Reference Reference on the HTML 3.2 standard, code-named Wilbur. This page is written by Amound "Galactus" Engelfriet of the Web Design Group.
An offline version (in *.HLP format) is also available for the Windows environment.
Yahoo's Index on HTML Guides and Tutorials A collection of various links for learning HTML, including HTML style manuals, various tutorials, examples of bad designs, and general guides.
A Beginner's Guide to HTML It is written by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and used by many as a starting point for understanding HTML. It is an introduction only and does not intend to offer instructions on every aspects of HTML.
Bare Bones HTML 3.2 Quickref Another reference page for the HTML 3.2 standard. Help files available in several formats (such as HTML and plain text versions) and languages (including a Chinese one).

Sun's Java Language

Java/HotJava: An Introduction It provides a concise, accurate introduction to the Java programming language and its applications and potential on the Internet, including a brief history of Java, definition of terms, specifications, and possible uses.
Yahoo's Index on Java Guides and Tutorials Includes introductions, brief histroy, tutorials, discussion groups, commercial publications, tips, and examples.
The Java Developer A FAQ site devoted to Java developers worldwide. It provides a range of valuable services and information.
The Java Tutorial An online tutorial to writing programs in the Java language by Sun Microsystems. This is an online version of The Java Tutorial by Mary Campione and Kathy Walrath.
