Listserv (also called a Mailing List, or just List) is a forum for exchanging, sharing and discussing ideas among a group of participants through email. As described by the European Academic and Research Network Association (EARN), this service is convenient because it was Listserv (and not individual users) who managed the distribution of email to all final recipients. Users had only to send mail to the email address of a list in order to communicate with any number of list members. This greatly simplified the task of sending email to potentially very large audiences. Click here to learn more about Listserv and email.

Additional resources are also available for searching Listserv discussion groups. These include search engines for Listservs (which are very similar to Web search engines or Usenet search engines), and lists of Listservs.

To join one of these discussion groups, you need to subscribe to a Mailing List first. For more information and a brief tutorial on how to join some of these Listservs, click here.
