How to Join?

You are now at level: Home [Web Site Map]: Usenet Groups: How to Join?

The following example illustrates what will happen when you click one of the Usenet newsgroups listed in the previous section.

For example, you wish to participate misc.consumers, a newsgroup for discussing product reviews and consumer interests. A separate window similar to the one below will be opened when you click on the link.
Usenet Example 1
Note that you are now attached to the CTSC News Server with a single Usenet newsgroup called misc.consumers (1). To read a particular message, just click on one of the message subjects listed in the top right-hand window (2), such as in this example, Lloyd Parker’s reply to the subject Re: Consumer Reports and Chrysler Quality (3).

Usenet Example 2

What if you want to participate another newsgroup, such as hk.biz.general, a discussion group on various business issues specifically for Hong Kong users?

The quickest way is to add a newsgroup from the existing news server (in our example, HKBU’s CTSC News Server) by opening the File menu and choose Add Newsgroup under Netscape News.

You will then see a dialog box similar to the following one. To add a newsgroup, just type its full name. You should make sure that the spelling is correct, and all periods (.) are included, such as in this case:

  • hk.biz.general
    and NOT
  • hk.bis.general or
  • hkbiz.general
    Usenet Example 3

You should now see something like the following screen, with an additional newsgroup called hk.biz.general.
