Klaus-Gerd Giesen, ¡§Asian Hospitality in Kant's Cosmopolitan Law¡¨

Kant's cosmopolitan law deals with the relationships between individuals and foreigners. Its very basis is the concept of hospitality, which defines the moral rights and duties of persons arriving in a foreign country. Asia plays a central role in Kant's moral argumentation. He examines the situation of European settlers in China, Japan, East India, etc., and reaches the conclusion that in all these cases Asian hospitality granted to Europeans was abused, which leads him to proclaim that ¡§a violation of rights at one place of the earth is felt at all other places¡¨. The aim of the paper is to provide an understanding of Kant's political analysis of the Asian situation, and to explore the tension between his empirical analysis of Asia and the ethical content of his cosmopolitan law.
