Peter Schröder, ¡§'Irgend ein Vertrauen ... muss ... übrig bleiben' ¡V The Idea of Trust in Kant's Moral Philosophy¡¨
In my paper I will explore the notion of trust and confidence in Kant's writings. Autonomy and Obligation depend both on the possibility of mutual trust. This is a theme which seems less explored in Kant scholarship, but as I will argue figures prominently throughout Kant's moral and political philosophy. His occasional criticism of Machiavelli (morality versus reason of state doctrine) and the Jesuits (¡§Jesuitencasuistik¡¨) alike are just one rather obvious indicator that Kant fully realized the importance of trust. But this notion goes well beyond the classical idea of pacta sunt servanda. I will argue that as a concept the idea of mutual trust ranges from Kant's writings on international relations, to his writings on the state and the individual and his notion of autonomy and self-obligation (Selbstbindung) as well.
