The Fourfold Cross

This simplest way to identify the basic interrelationships implied by the logico-graphic pattern of the fourfold cross is to abstract all content by depicting each of the two oppositions in terms of a mathematical distinction between positivity (+) and negativity (-). By stipulating that the horizontal axis is negative in comparison to the vertical axis (as represented by the first of the two terms labeling each pole) and that the top and left are positive in comparison to the bottom and right (as represented by the second of the two terms), the following "standard map" is produced:

-+ ----------------|---------------- --
