A COMPLETE INDEX TO KEMP SMITH'S TRANSLATION

OF IMMANUEL KANT'S CRITIQUE OF PURE REASON

Forward

This Index was produced in 1984-85 with the help of the Oxford University Computing Service (using the KDEM facilities and the 'Oxford Concordance Program'). It lists all the occurrences of every significant word (in alphabetical order) in Kemp Smith's translation of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. About 40 insignificant words (e.g. 'a', 'an', 'the', etc.) are omitted. After each word is listed the total number of its occurrences, followed by the page and line number of every occurrence. The Greek and Latin words (except a priori and a posteriori) are listed, together with the symbols, after the letter "z". After the last word in each letter of the alphabet, the total number of different words beginning with that letter is specified, as well as the overall total number of occurrences of words beginning with that letter.

The files are in plain ASCII format, with no printer control codes and with no characters whose high bits are set; so the individual files may be copied or piped directly to any line printer. Each file is named for the letter whose references it contains.

Please note that there are minor variations in the different impressions of Kemp Smith's translation, so the Index references will differ slightly in a few places from some versions of the text (e.g. the line numbers may be one or two off).

A printed copy of the Index (445 pages, photocopied and softbound) can be purchased for US$30. A concordance (listing the context of each occurrence as well as the page and line number) is also available on microfiche ($15). Please write to the compiler:
