Hello, my name is Andy. This Philopsychy Society member's profile has been on the web since March 7, 1996. I am a writer, speaker, social thinker, radio commentator. Something I've written that might be of some interest to you is called The Parable of the Tribes: The Problem of Power in Social Evolution. It is commercially published (by a large company). SUNY Press 1995. It is not available in computerized form.
Other things I've written that also might interest you are listed below:
Out of Weakness: Healing the Wounds that Drive Us to War (Bantam Books, 1988)
Sowings and Reapings: The Cycling of Good and Evil in the Human System (Knowledge Systems, 1989)
The Illusion of Choice: How the Market Economy Shapes Our Destiny (SUNY Press, 1993)
Fool's Gold: The Fate of Values in a World of Goods (HarperSanFrancisco, 1993)
Living Postumously: Confronting the Loss of Vital Powers (Henry Holt, in press)
For the time being, I do not wish to trade any of the above for writings by other Society members.
Finally, just so you can get to know me a little, here's something special I'd like you to know:
For the past several years, my work has focused on the "culture war" in the United States, i.e. in that often strident and polarized conflict in America between different moral perspectives (possibly describably as "traditional" and "countercultural"). In this work, I have sought ways of bridging across the conflict, working toward a higher wisdom than either side possesses. At present, I am exploring --and considering writing books about--two topics: one, to develop the point that knowing what is right and wrong is more complicated a matter than people generally recognize; the other to explore the value and the limits --and the methods--of openness and honesty in interpersonal relationships.
Most of my work over the past twenty-seven years can be encompassed by the phrase: "seeking an integrated understanding of the challenges humankind faces in its quest to create a more humane and viable civilization."
Friendship is very high in my pantheon of values. In other words, I place a lot of stock in bonds.
