GAP-L Welcome Message

To subscribe to GAP-L (Global Author-Publishers List), send the message "subscribe GAP-L" (without the quote marks) to:

majordomo@listserver.hkbu.edu.hk

When you do this, a "Welcome" message will be sent to you. The text of that message is given below, for your convenience.

++++++++++++

PURPOSE:

The main purpose of this list is to discuss issues and share information relating to writing and publishing in general, and to self-publishing (i.e., works published by the author) in particular. It was officially launched on July 4th 1996. After reading this message, please save it for future reference. It contains helpful information about how to subscribe, unsubscribe, and send various other commands to the list.

++++++++++++

LISTOWNER:

GAP-L is sponsored by the Philopsychy Society (for further information, see http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/~ppp/PPS.html), and is owned and operated by Stephen Palmquist (stevepq@hkbu.edu.hk), with the assistance of the Hong Kong Baptist University Computing & Telecommunications Services Centre.

ETIQUETTE GUIDELINES:

To send a message to everyone on the list, address it to "GAP-L@listserver.hkbu.edu.hk". At the moment, GAP-L is a fully open, unmoderated list, and will stay that way as long as members are careful to abide by standard internet etiquette. Here is a short summary of the guidelines we should all try to follow:

1. Keep your messages brief. Most members of this list are too busy to read long messages and may prefer to press the "delete" key if your message is too long. With this in mind, please do not copy a previous message in your reply unless the message was posted at least a week earlier. Instead, take the time to write a line or two explaining which message you are responding to.
2. Be polite. If you are offended by something somebody has written, it is best to contact that person privately. If your personal attempts to resolve the problem are unsuccessful, or if you are concerned about a certain person or the tone of certain messages, contact the listowner. Do not "flame" the person on the list.
3. The "reply" function is set to reply to the individual who wrote the message rather than to the group. Use "reply all" to reply to the whole group. But before doing the latter, always stop to consider whether your message is really intended for everyone. Interesting conversations between two or three persons should normally be held off the list, with periodic summaries posted to the list inviting others to join in.
4. Unlike many other lists, advertisements and self-descriptions of your own publications are welcome on GAP-L! In fact, we encourage you, once you join, to post a message telling us all about anything you have self-published, or why you are interested in joining such a list.

Members of GAP-L are encouraged, though not required, to join the Philopsychy Society (our sponsoring organization). To join, fill out the form located at http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/~ppp/PPSform.html.

MAJORDOMO GUIDELINES:

This list is run by the common "majordomo" software. You can get a summary of all majordomo commands by sending a message to

majordomo@listserver.hkbu.edu.hk

with the body of the message containing the single word:

help

You will receive a message informing you about numerous commands that can be sent to the above address (the same one you used for your initial "subscribe" command). The most important command to remember is "unsubscribe" (without the quote marks). Don't send this (or any other commands) to the list address; send it to the majordomo address.

Here are a few of the most useful majordomo commands:

WHICH: This command will tell you which HKBU lists you are a member of.

INFO GAP-L: This command will send you a copy of this welcome message.

WHO GAP-L: This command will send you a list of all the current subscribers.
