The University and the Society of Chinese Materia Medica are participating in the annual Hong Kong Flower Show organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, which is being held at Victoria Park until Sunday (20 March). Visitors can enhance their knowledge of the art of penjing (Chinese bonsai) and traditional Chinese medicine through a display of 13 miniature penjing masterpieces selected from the University’s Man Lung Garden and a collection of medicinal flowers. This year, the University won the Special Award for Outstanding Exhibit (Local) for its exquisite penjing items at the Show.
The award-winning penjing exhibits on display include Chinese Elm, Surinam Cherry, Fukien Tea, Chinese Banyan and Jade Plant, Vietnam Leaf-flower, and Common Jasmine Orange. At the annual show, a collection of medicinal flowers are also being showcased by the Society of Chinese Materia Medica, such as Largeleaf Hydrangea, Chinese Rose and Wormwoodlike Motherwort. Theses medicinal flowers are not only highly appreciated, but are also good for relaxation and refining temperament.
In 2000, the University received a donation of HK$2 million from Dr Wu Yee-sun, founder of Wing Lung Bank, for the establishment of the Wu Yee Sun Penjing Foundation Fund to support the development of penjing. The Man Lung Garden, which is located at the Kam Shing Road entrance to Ho Sin Hang campus, HKBU, was set up with the aim of enhancing the cultural ambience of the campus.
