HKBU business student, the sole HK winner of CY Tung Scholarship, to embark on Fall voyage of Semester at Sea 2018

Sunday, 02 Sep 2018

A Year 4 student of the School of Business of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) majoring in Applied Economics, William Lun, is the only student in Hong Kong to win this year's CY Tung Scholarship. He is one of the seven winners in the world to be awarded scholarships worth a total of US$20,000. William will join university students from around the globe to board the "floating campus" of Semester at Sea (SAS) 2018. The 107-day Fall voyage will embark from Hamburg, Germany in September and take the students to visit 13 cities in 11 countries.

William is an extrovert and an energetic person. He is eager to explore, gain new knowledge and take on different challenges. His outgoing character was clearly demonstrated throughout the various student activities that he joined. He showcased his brilliant presentation and debating techniques in local and overseas Model United Nations conferences and won numerous awards, such as Honourable Mention at United Nations Security Council and World Health Organization. In addition, he demonstrated the ethos of Whole Person Education upheld by HKBU by serving the community with his academic knowledge. He volunteered as a summer tutor at Summerbridge Hong Kong, a local non-profit making organisation, where he taught secondary school students and underprivileged groups ways of enhancing their English proficiency and skills.

William was delighted to receive the scholarship and thanked Mr Jake Ricci, Lecturer of the Language Centre, Faculty of Arts, for his recommendation. He said: "I am honoured to have such a valuable opportunity to go outside to explore the world. With the strong support of the University, I was also given an opportunity to go on a one-year exchange in California last year, and attended the Model United Nations conference in Geneva. All these precious experiences not only helped broaden my worldview, but also enriched my knowledge in different aspects of life." William expressed his desire to develop his career in education or civil affairs upon graduation or to pursue a master's degree in political science.

Prior to joining the voyage, William was awarded an opportunity by the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation to conduct an internship in Singapore this summer. During the internship, he worked in the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council to provide research assistance, support event organisation and perform administrative duties. Through this work experience, he broadened his global horizons and enhanced his understanding and knowledge of current world affairs.

Founded in 1963, SAS is the world's premier global comparative education programme open to undergraduate students of all majors from around the world. This year, the voyage will embark from Hamburg, Germany and call at Barcelona and Valencia (Spain), Tema (Ghana), Cape Town (South Africa), Port Louis (Mauritius), Cochin (India), Yangon (Myanmar), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Shanghai (China), Kobe (Japan), Honolulu (Hawaii) before anchoring at San Diego (USA). Other scholarship winners are from prestigious universities in China and the US, including Fudan University, Baylor University, Pennsylvania State University, and Elon University.
