HKBU welcomed a new cohort of over 2,000 undergraduate students and international exchange students at its 63rd Convocation today (4 September).

On the occasion, the University also conferred Honorary University Fellowships on six distinguished persons in recognition of their significant contributions to society and their support for the University. The recipients are: School Manager of Pui Ching Middle School and The Hong Kong Sze Yap Commercial and Industrial Association Wong Tai Shan Memorial College Mr Cheng Sing-yip (鄭成業先生), leading breast cancer specialist Dr Polly Cheung Suk-yee (張淑儀醫生), Chief Corporate Development Officer of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited Ms Quince Chong Wai-yan (莊偉茵女士), Executive Director of Toyo Mall Limited Mr Francis Law Sau-fai (羅守輝先生), Director of the Tsang Shiu Tim Charitable Foundation Mr Tsang Wing-wah (曾永華律師), and Managing Director of United Overseas Investments Limited Dr David Wong Yau-kar (黃友嘉博士).

In his speech, President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Roland Chin encouraged students to fully understand the talents they have. He said that HKBU recognises diversity, makes different pathways possible, and values talents of all types. He urged students to explore their own talents and discover and develop them to the full.

Professor Chin also said that the diversity of opportunities in today’s complex world demands the diversification of talents. New talents lead to new opportunities, and new opportunities drive the growth of new talents. The talents that each of the students brings to HKBU are unique. When students’ diverse talents blossom and interact and cross-fertilise, they find new insights, develop new solutions to complex problems, and create new opportunities. Most importantly, they make a difference.

Professor Chin wished the students an enjoyable journey of learning and discovery in the next four years, an experience that will open their minds and develop their talents.

Speaking on behalf of the Honorary University Fellows, Ms Quince Chong expressed their gratitude to HKBU for bestowing the extraordinary honour on them. She said the University is one of Asia’s leading research-led liberal arts universities which is committed to whole person education and delivering academic excellence in a caring, creative and global culture. It will equip students with not just knowledge and skills, but also values, ethics and a critical mindset enabling them to navigate in the world of the unknown.

Ms Chong said technology, innovation and new social norms are reshaping the world in unprecedented ways. She encouraged students to explore new frontiers, challenge old ideas and give their best shot in making their dreams come true, and to keep learning how to lead the way in the years to come. Through this journey, they will become a better person and find their roles in contributing to a better world for mankind.
