The HKBU Secondary School Principals’ Day 2025, a signature event with a 20-year history, was organised by the Academic Registry on 28 February. Secondary school principals and teachers were engaged to exchange ideas with the University community on emerging education issues pertinent to the theme “Transdisciplinary and Trans-sectoral Body-Mind-Spirit Education”.
In his opening remarks, Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor, said, “In today’s rapidly developing world, students would face numerous challenges and pressures in both their personal lives and academic pursuits. Therefore, the University has proactively promoted transdisciplinary education to encourage students to integrate knowledge from various disciplines, equipping them with the capability to face future challenges and shape their future.”
Professor Wai highlighted the University’s commitment to support the well-being of students by introducing various services to enhance students’ physical, mental and spiritual health. This includes assigning a senior student as a peer mentor to help new students in adapting to university life, launching the Mental Health First Aid Captain programme to raise mental health awareness and training students to support peers in need, and making “Healthy Lifestyle” a core course for all students to engage them in physical activities and foster a healthy lifestyle.
Distinguished keynote speaker Dr the Hon Lam Ching-choi, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Mental Health and Chief Executive Officer of Haven of Hope Christian Service, shared his views on medical and public services and provided examples to demonstrate how the transdisciplinary approach of integrating knowledge from different disciplines could effectively address problems and achieve positive outcomes. To address mental health issues of youngsters, he emphasised that “prevention is better than cure” and highlighted the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles through education. “Maintaining good health habits, including sufficient sleep, a balanced diet and regular exercise are essential elements of maintaining mental health,” he said.
Professor Dominic Yeo, Associate Professor of the School of Communication, was the facilitator of the panel discussion session, while Emily Ng, a student of the Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (Global Entertainment), one of the transdisciplinary programmes introduced by the University since 2022/23, served as the student respondent.
HKBU students interacted with the visitors at the Secondary School Principals’ Day during the Student Poster Session, a new initiative in 2025, where they showcased their outstanding work and achievements through service learning and academic studies.
