Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) welcomes the HKSAR Government's appointment of Dr Clement Chen Cheng-jen (陳鎮仁), SBS, JP, as Chairman of the Council and the Court from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2021.
In response to the appointment, Dr Chen said: "I am deeply honoured to be appointed Council Chairman of HKBU, a champion of whole person education. I look forward to working hand in hand with the HKBU management and stakeholders in delivering excellence in teaching, research, and service in a caring, creative, and global culture"
Welcoming the appointment, Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, said: "The University is delighted to have Dr Clement Chen as the incoming Council Chairman to help steer HKBU towards the goals set out in our Institutional Strategic Plan 2018-2028. We look forward to his guidance and wise counsel as we strive to become a leading liberal arts university in Asia for the world with a focus on quality teaching and learning, innovative research, and dedicated service to the community."
Dr Clement Chen is the Executive Director of Tai Hing Cotton Mill Limited. A public-spirited and eminent industrialist, he has made substantial contributions to the community through a wide range of professional and public services, including serving as the Honorary President of Federation of Hong Kong Industries, Member of Standing Committee on Directorate Salaries and Conditions of Service, and Member of Board of Governors of Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong. He served as Chairman of the Vocational Training Council, the Youth Education, Employment and Training Task Force, Hong Kong Productivity Council, Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund Board, and the Federation of Hong Kong Industries. He was also a member of the Education Commission and the Council of the Open University of Hong Kong. He was awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star and was appointed as Justice of the Peace by the HKSAR Government, and received an honorary doctoral degree by the University of Central Lancashire, UK.
The University is also pleased that other distinguished members of the community have been newly appointed to its Council. They are: Mr Chui Wing-on (徐永安), Partner of Bird & Bird; Rev Dr Lo Hing-choi (羅慶才), Senior Pastor of Ngau Chi Wan Chuk Yuen Swatow Baptist Church; Ms So Ching (蘇晴), Executive Director of Wong Tung & Partners Limited; and Ms Connie Wong Wai-ching (王惠貞), SBS, JP, Managing Director of Wong Sun Hing Limited.
The University welcomes the reappointment of two serving Council members: Dr Terence Chan Ho-wah (陳浩華), Chief Executive of HSL Capital Limited, and Professor Chan Wing-kwong (陳永光), Chinese medicine practitioner of Chan Wing Kwong Chinese Medicine Practitioner Clinic, and the appointment of two staff-elected Council members: Professor Patrick Lau Wing-chung (劉永松), Professor in the HKBU Department of Sport and Physical Education, and Dr Alfred Tan Keng-tiong (陳慶忠), Head of the HKBU Knowledge Transfer Office.
The University expresses its deepest appreciation to Mr Cheng Yan-kee (鄭恩基), BBS, JP, the outgoing Chairman of the Council and the Court. President Chin said: "Mr Cheng has demonstrated his able leadership through his outstanding service and tremendous contributions to the University since 1999. His selfless and tireless devotion to the work of the University and steadfast commitment to education has won him the utmost respect of the University community."
Sincere appreciation also goes to Council members Ms Mabel Chan Mei-bo (陳美寳), Ms Scarlett Pong Oi-lan (龐愛蘭), BBS, JP, and Ms Karen Tang Shuk-tak (鄧淑德) who will complete their terms of service at the end of 2018.
